PAUL FLETCHER GROOMING GIRL IN WILTSHIRE AND WARRINGTON: SOLDIER JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES
In a case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the serious consequences of such actions, Paul Fletcher, a 27-year-old soldier from Wiltshire, was sentenced to prison after engaging in a disturbing relationship with a 15-year-old girl. The girl, who was residing in a care home in Warrington due to significant family issues, became the target of Fletcher’s manipulative behavior through the social media platform Facebook.
Fletcher initiated contact with the vulnerable teenager, sending her numerous text messages in which he expressed his feelings and desires.
Among his inappropriate messages, he talked about wanting to 'strip off' her clothes, indicating his sexual intentions.
The girl responded to his advances, and their online communication eventually led to a meeting in person.
In April, Fletcher booked a room at the Travelodge on Kendrick Street in Warrington, where the two engaged in sexual activity.
This occurred just two months after the girl’s 15th birthday, making the act illegal and deeply concerning.
The case was brought to light during a routine check when care home staff observed Fletcher picking up the girl in his car, raising suspicions about their relationship.
Authorities were promptly alerted, and police officers responded to the scene.
They visited the Travelodge, where they found Fletcher and the girl together.
During questioning, officers asked Fletcher about the girl’s age.
Initially, he claimed she was 16, but she clarified that she was only 15.
An examination of her phone revealed messages that confirmed the inappropriate relationship.
Hotel staff also reported hearing the sounds of sexual activity from the room.
Fletcher was arrested at an Army barracks in Wiltshire, where he was serving at the time of the offense.
His arrest followed a thorough investigation, and he subsequently pleaded guilty on July 15 to two counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16 and grooming.
During the court proceedings at Warrington Crown Court, Judge David Hale emphasized the dangers posed by the internet, especially when used to exploit vulnerable individuals.
He stated, “Paul Fletcher, you contacted this girl over the internet and started an online relationship with her on Facebook.
There is no evidence to dispute that you initially claimed she was 18.
You were infatuated with her by the time you knew she was just 15.
You knew she was in a care home.
It must have dawned on you she was quite a vulnerable girl.
Notwithstanding that, you had sex with her on two occasions.
You must have known this was wrong and illegal.
The internet can be a very dangerous thing.” Fletcher was sentenced to a total of 32 months in prison for sexual activity with a girl under 16, and an additional 18 months for grooming, with the sentences to run concurrently.
Furthermore, he will be required to register as a sex offender for life and is prohibited from having any contact with girls under the age of 16.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the perils of online interactions and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable youth from exploitation.
