JOHN WOOD'S SHOCKING VOYEURISM CRIME IN WILTSHIRE AND SWINDON

A man named John Wood, aged 42, from Wiltshire, has been convicted of a series of disturbing voyeuristic offenses that spanned over six years, involving the illegal hacking into private home security systems and secretly filming individuals in various locations, including the popular holiday resort of Butlins in Bognor Regis.

The case was heard at Swindon Crown Court, where the severity and systematic nature of his crimes were thoroughly examined.

Prosecutor Russell Pyne revealed that Wood’s criminal activities came to light during a joint investigation conducted by the cyber unit of the South West regional organised crime squads, in collaboration with the FBI.

The investigation was initially focused on the activities of a notorious super-hacker, Colton Grubbs, who was known for developing LuminosityLink, a software tool that enabled users to covertly activate cameras and microphones within targeted devices to record unsuspecting victims in their own homes.

Although there was no direct evidence that Wood had used LuminosityLink, authorities discovered that he had purchased the software in July 2015.

Further analysis of Wood’s computers uncovered a vast collection of secret video recordings, dating back to 2011 and continuing until 2016.

These recordings were made without the consent of the individuals involved and included footage captured by hacking into private webcams and other camera-enabled devices.

A program called Blue Iris, typically used for managing CCTV feeds, was exploited by Wood to monitor multiple illicitly accessed cameras simultaneously.

The police found approximately 1,400 video files stored in a folder named 'Blue Iris Videos,' the majority of which depicted people engaged in sexual activities within their homes.

Investigators linked these videos to 45 different IP addresses, indicating the extent of his covert surveillance.

Among the victims was a man from London whose home security camera was accessed by Wood.

The victim expressed feelings of vulnerability and violation, stating, "It made me feel vulnerable and violated that the sanctity of our home has been accessed." In addition to the videos he had obtained through hacking, Wood had recorded nearly 300 videos himself.

He used a camera to film women from windows in his own residence, as well as in a holiday cottage and at Butlins in Bognor Regis in November 2012.

The footage taken at Butlins included women in changing rooms, with a total of 77 videos shot over five days, capturing over 167 victims, including children.

Police confirmed that no indecent material was found on Wood’s computer, and the victims have not been identified.

One of the victims, who was filmed using the toilet in Wood’s home, expressed her shock and disgust, saying, "I was absolutely shocked and disgusted that he deliberately made recordings of me behind closed doors." Another woman commented on the disturbing nature of such acts, stating, "The truth is, it’s frustrating to think there are people out there that do things like this." Wood, who was previously residing on Station Road in Minety, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court to six counts of voyeurism and two charges under the Computer Misuse Act.

His defense lawyer, Nicholas Wragg, explained that Wood had been diagnosed with several mental health conditions, including autism, hoarding disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and was undergoing therapy.

Wragg emphasized that Wood was married, had a daughter with learning difficulties, and was the primary breadwinner for his family.

It was noted that Wood had maintained a good character prior to these offenses and fully admitted his guilt during police interviews in 2018.

Since his arrest, he had remained out of trouble for three years.

Wragg argued that Wood’s understanding of the harm caused by his actions was limited, stating, "His understanding has not been on an emotional level because he lacks that capacity.

It has been purely intellectual, which makes it difficult for him to fully grasp the impact on others." While acknowledging the seriousness of the offenses, the judge, Peter Crabtree, recognized that Wood was receiving mental health treatment and noted that some of his victims had been involved in selling sex shows to voyeurs, although the police found no indecent material on his devices.

The judge also pointed out that Wood’s targeting of attractive women and his concealment of cameras, along with his denial when confronted, indicated awareness of the wrongdoing.

As part of his sentence, Wood received a two-year prison term, suspended for two years.

He was ordered to complete the Horizon sex offender rehabilitation program, 30 days of rehabilitation activities, and 100 hours of unpaid work.

Additionally, he was placed under a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for the same period.

The judge warned that any breach of these conditions would result in immediate imprisonment, emphasizing that Wood’s understanding of his actions was limited and that he did not appear genuinely committed to rehabilitation at this stage.
