BENJAMIN CAIN AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN LANCASHIRE
Benjamin Cain, a 42-year-old care worker, became the focus of a serious criminal case involving a young girl in Lancashire.Cain was employed at a children’s care home in the Fylde region, where he initially met the teenager whose life he would later profoundly impact through a series of disturbing events.
During the proceedings at Preston Crown Court, it was revealed that the teenage girl, who was under care at the time, developed romantic feelings for Cain.
She testified that she fell in love with him while residing at the local authority’s care facility.
Cain, significantly older than the girl—more than twice her age—claimed he was unaware of her feelings or her infatuation.
However, she recounted that a few months after she transitioned to supported accommodation, Cain had engaged in a physical gesture that indicated intimacy.
She described Cain embracing her and giving her a kiss full on the lips, which she referred to as a ‘snog.’ Judge Philip Parry, delivering the sentence, noted that the girl was “absolutely delighted” by these developments.
Cain had also promised her that he would visit her once he returned from a planned holiday, which was set to occur in two weeks.
Following this initial contact, Cain and the teenage girl embarked on a sexual relationship that persisted for approximately fourteen months.
Throughout the trial, the court learned of the imbalance of power in this relationship.
Cain, as a care worker, held a position of authority and trust, which he exploited.
The girl described Cain as having a temper and directed her with arrogance, stating that he told her, “you're my girlfriend - I can have sex with you whenever I want.” During one disturbing episode, she recounted that they were engaged in sexual activity when she suddenly wanted to stop.
Cain ignored her protests, became aggressive, and pushed her against a wall.
He also pushed her face into a pillow while she screamed, which she described as a terrifying experience.
Following this incident, the girl accused Cain of rape.
According to her testimony, Cain responded by laughing at her, further highlighting the disturbing imbalance and her victimization.
The girl subsequently ended the relationship but continued to see Cain hanging around her place of work for about a month afterward.
Approximately a year after their relationship ended, Cain reached out to her through text messages, claiming he wanted to “smooth things over,” which she recognized as an attempt to manipulate her.
The girl’s responses to Cain’s attempts at contact were considered appropriate by the court, with her stating that his messages were motivated by guilt and an attempt to prevent her from speaking out.
She confided in her partner and later informed the manager at the care home where she met Cain.
This led to Cain’s arrest, during which he denied any wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, he was dismissed from his role as a care worker.
After a week-long trial, Benjamin Cain was found guilty of rape and engaging in sexual activity with a child by someone in a position of trust.
The judge sentenced him to five years and nine months in prison.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Parry emphasized that Cain had been trained in appropriate conduct around vulnerable children and the importance of avoiding exploitation.
Despite acknowledging Cain’s lack of previous convictions, the judge pointed out that Cain’s good character had ironically made him more accessible to vulnerable girls, facilitating opportunities for offending.
Cain’s actions, the judge concluded, were a betrayal of the trust placed in him as a care worker and a grave violation of the young girl’s safety and well-being.
