ALASTAIR WALSH SENTENCED IN ILFRACOMBE FOR ONLINE PAEDOPHILIA OFFENSES
Alastair Walsh, a 49-year-old man from Ilfracombe, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after attempting to contact children online.Walsh explained that his actions were a form of escapism from his monotonous job as a manager for an unnamed company, describing his motives as stemming from boredom.
He was convicted of three counts of attempted sexual communication with children and one count of distributing an indecent image.
Walsh was caught in a police sting in June 2022 when undercover officers set up three online profiles to engage with him.
He quickly shifted the conversations to sexual topics and discussed the possibility of meeting the 'girls'.
Walsh was unaware that the profiles were decoys, and no real children were involved.
Police executed a search at his home in Ilfracombe and confiscated devices.
During analysis, officers discovered evidence of Walsh communicating with other paedophiles and sharing his fantasies online.
Among the material found was a category B image of a girl aged between 10 and 12, along with conversations involving lengthy discussions about paedophilia.
Walsh admitted to the offences and told police that his online activity was a way to escape his personal difficulties, denying any intent to meet children in real life.
His defense, represented by Zoe Kuyken, stated that Walsh was experiencing personal struggles at the time, often drinking wine and cider daily, and was dissatisfied with his job.
Kuyken added that Walsh now has employment as a coach driver and feels much happier.
Judge David Evans commented on the case, saying: "It seems you have a clear interest in underage girls.
You engaged with three profiles for young girls aged 12-13 online.
You turned things sexual quite rapidly each time.
You send them partial photos of naked bodies and solicited images from them.
You discussed underage girls with other like-minded adults.
You clearly pose some risk of reoffending and clearly have an interest in underage girls."
