JOSHUA NEWTON FROM LANCASHIRE SENTENCED FOR REPEATEDLY BREACHING SEXUAL HARM PREVENTION ORDER AND POSSESSING OVER 800 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a serious case highlighting ongoing concerns about online child exploitation, Joshua Newton, a 25-year-old resident of Lancashire, has been sentenced to a significant prison term after repeatedly breaching court orders designed to protect children from sexual harm.

Newton’s criminal history includes being issued a five-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) in 2017, which was accompanied by a community order.

Despite this, he continued to engage in illegal activities related to indecent images of children.

In February 2022, he was further sentenced to 13 months in custody and was subject to a 15-year SHPO, reflecting the court’s recognition of the seriousness of his conduct and the need for strict supervision.

However, Newton’s violations persisted.

On April 22, 2023, shortly after his release from custody, his offender manager, Detective Constable Harrison, received information indicating that Newton had uploaded indecent images via Snapchat.

Acting on this intelligence, authorities visited Newton’s residence in Lancashire.

During the visit, Newton handed over a mobile phone, which was subsequently examined by police.

The initial analysis revealed a Snapchat account that had not been registered with the police, raising suspicions of clandestine activity.

Further forensic analysis of the device uncovered additional concerning details.

It was found that Newton had created a TikTok account that was also unregistered with authorities, and he had not obtained permission to access these social media platforms.

Both accounts were linked to an email address that Newton had not disclosed to the police, and this email was associated with two Google accounts.

The investigation also revealed that the phone contained access to a Mega cloud storage account, which held a total of 846 indecent images of children.

These images were categorized into three levels of severity: 465 in Category A, 146 in Category B, and 238 in Category C, along with three extreme pornographic images.

It was noted that the Mega app was installed on Newton’s phone on January 23, 2023, indicating recent activity related to the storage of illegal content.

Prosecutor Sarah Gruffydd emphasized that the images depicted a large number of children, although there was no evidence to suggest Newton had communicated directly with any minors.

During the court proceedings, Newton’s defense attorney, Anthony Horsfall, acknowledged the gravity of his client’s actions.

He described Newton as living a “lifestyle of isolation,” which had been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an increased willingness to indulge in his illicit interests.

Despite this, Horsfall emphasized that Newton was aware of the seriousness of his conduct.

Judge Robert Altham delivered the sentence, condemning Newton’s persistent offending and failure to comply with court orders.

The judge stated, “You are a persistent offender.

So far you have shown no intention of complying with the orders made by the court and that is troubling.

You have a persistent and enduring sexual interest in children such that you do pose a risk.

Every one of these images of a child represents the abuse of a real living, breathing child somewhere.

Each time you obtain one of these images you are encouraging people to abuse real living children.

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself for seeking to perpetuate that industry.

You are going to have to learn you must abide by those orders otherwise the sentences are going to get longer and longer and you will spend much more of your young adult life in prison.” Newton, who was detained at HMP Risley but whose last known address was on Albert Street in Burnley, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of breaching his SHPO, one count of failing to comply with notification requirements, three counts of making indecent images, and one count of possessing extreme pornographic images.

As a result, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison, reflecting the court’s determination to impose a severe penalty for his repeated violations and possession of illegal content.
