JAMES GATHERCOLE SENTENCED FOR SERIES OF INDECENT EXPOSURES ON SOUTH LONDON RAILWAYS
A man has been jailed following a series of incidents involving masturbating in public on trains across South London, after an investigation carried out by the British Transport Police (BTP).James Gathercole, aged 36 and from Beckenham, repeatedly exposed himself to women and teenage girls onboard trains in South-East London before being apprehended by authorities.
Gathercole was convicted of ten charges of indecent exposure committed between December 2020 and November 2021, including six offenses in a single day.
He was sentenced at London Crown Court in February to sixteen months in prison and will be on the sex offenders register for the next ten years.
Detective Constable Sonja Lucas stated, "It’s clear from Gathercole’s persistent and sickening actions that he poses a danger to women and girls.
I’m pleased to see that after a thorough investigation this serial offender is no longer at large." She added, "These incidents likely had a serious impact on the victims’ lives, and no one should have to endure such vile behaviour." Gathercole’s arrest was initiated last November when a teenage girl approached an off-duty police officer at New Cross Station in distress, revealing that Gathercole had exposed himself and inappropriately touched himself in her presence on a train.
Officers from the BTP quickly responded and detained him, remanding him in custody.
This arrest prompted a dedicated investigation that linked Gathercole to numerous reports of similar incidents on trains in South-East London.
The court revealed that on August 7, 2021, Gathercole committed six separate offenses throughout the afternoon and evening, exposing himself to young women and teenage girls on services traveling between New Cross Gate, Lewisham, and Sydenham stations.
Detective Constable Lucas emphasized, "We are fully committed to eradicating this kind of behaviour, and we will continue increased patrols in crime hotspots to catch and deter sexual offenders." She also urged the public to report any sexual offences or harassment on the railway, advising them to text 61016 with their reports.
"We will always take your reports seriously," she reassured.
