PERTH MAN BARRIE CAMERON STALKED AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTED NEIGHBOUR DURING LOCKDOWN
In October 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving a Perth resident named Barrie Cameron, who engaged in a prolonged campaign of stalking and sexual assault against a neighbour who had previously assisted him during the COVID-19 lockdown period. The Perth Sheriff Court heard that Cameron, aged 42, became increasingly invasive and aggressive towards the 28-year-old woman, who for legal reasons cannot be named.
Over a span of more than five months, from March 1 to August 14, Cameron's behaviour escalated from unwanted attention to outright harassment and assault, leaving the victim deeply distressed and anxious.
According to court reports, Cameron's actions turned into what was described as a 'neighbour-from-hell' ordeal.
He repeatedly invaded her personal space, stormed into her home, and engaged in unsettling physical contact.
On one occasion, he entered her residence uninvited, sat on her sofa, and hugged her tightly.
During this encounter, he made inappropriate comments, telling her she made him 'horny,' which added to her discomfort and fear.
The court was also informed that Cameron's disturbing behaviour extended into public spaces.
On a separate incident, he was observed leering at the woman while she was caring for her baby, singing a nursery rhyme.
He then remarked that her actions were 'quite a turn-on,' which alarmed her further and contributed to her growing unease.
Further troubling interactions occurred when Cameron appeared at her home seeking to give her beers.
During these visits, conversations took a bizarre and unsettling turn.
He confided in her that he had overheard her and her partner having sex and expressed that he had not been sexually active for a long time and was feeling 'very horny.' Despite her attempts to discourage such discussions, Cameron persisted, making her increasingly wary of his intentions.
The victim, who lives with her children and partner—who often works away from home—became visibly distressed.
Her children were frightened by Cameron's persistent presence and behaviour, and she herself was left feeling upset and anxious.
The situation reached a breaking point in July when she encountered Cameron during a night out.
She tried to dismiss him, but he made inappropriate remarks, including saying, 'I don’t even fancy you,' and then added, 'you’re quite sexy when you’re mad.' Despite her efforts to walk away, Cameron followed her, calling her 'babe' and eventually slapping her on the bottom.
Although he apologized afterward, she perceived his actions as a sign of his amusement at her discomfort.
On August 14, Cameron was involved in a violent struggle with police officers who attempted to arrest him.
He resisted arrest fiercely, attempting to break free from the officers' grasp and had to be restrained with rigid cuffs.
The police reports confirmed his violent resistance, which further underscored the seriousness of his conduct.
Following the court proceedings, Sheriff Pino di Emidio ordered Cameron to stay away from the victim, imposing a two-year non-harassment order to prevent any further contact.
Additionally, Cameron was sentenced to complete 105 hours of unpaid community service and was placed under social work supervision for a period of two years.
It was also noted that Cameron continued to reside near the victim, which posed ongoing concerns for her safety and well-being.
In light of his actions, Cameron was placed on the Sex Offenders Register, reflecting the gravity of his offences and the court's efforts to protect the victim from further harm.
