WILLIAM EDWARDS, CHILD ABUSER FROM PERTH, JAILED FOR THREE YEARS
In July 1998, William Edwards, a 69-year-old man from the Oakbank area of Perth, was sentenced to three years in prison for sexual abuse committed nearly two decades earlier.
Edwards, who was found guilty by a jury and received the maximum penalty, had systematically abused a neighbour’s daughter over a period of 10 years, starting after her sixth birthday.
Edwards, who worked as a whisky warehouse transport manager, showed no emotion as he was led away to serve his sentence.
He is also known to have asthma and diabetes.
The court was told that Edwards’ abuse had a devastating impact on the girl’s life.
Sheriff John McInnes stated, "The victim, now 24, had suffered a nervous breakdown and had dropped out of university." He added, "You were a neighbour of the victim and you became a grandfather figure to her from soon after she moved next door."
