TERENCE DENHAM SENT TO JAIL IN DORSET FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON CHILDREN
In November 2008, a man named Terence Michael Denham, who is registered as a sex offender, was sentenced to a total of 20 months in prison after being convicted of three separate sexual assault charges involving a child under the age of 13.The incident took place in Dorset, where Denham’s activities came under police scrutiny.
According to court proceedings at Bournemouth Crown Court, the case was initiated when a police officer conducted a routine visit to Denham’s residence.
During this visit, the officer discovered that Denham had developed a relationship with a young girl.
This revelation prompted further investigation, leading to police interviews with Denham, during which he admitted that he had been alone with the girl, who was under 13 years old.
The young girl involved in the case provided police with additional details, revealing that her father was aware of her interactions with Denham.
She also disclosed that Denham had taken her to Poole on several occasions and had purchased her small-value items, which raised concerns about grooming and exploitation.
At the time of the court hearing, Denham was 39 years old and was described as having no fixed abode.
He pleaded guilty to all three charges brought against him.
His defense lawyer, Nicola McIntosh, requested the judge, Christopher Harvey Clark QC, to consider the nature of the offenses carefully.
She emphasized that the charges should not be viewed as grooming, despite Denham’s prior criminal record.
McIntosh highlighted that Denham had admitted guilt at the earliest opportunity, attributed his behavior to alcohol abuse, and expressed a desire to seek help.
He was seeking assistance to stop drinking and was willing to participate in a sexual offenders group work program.
Judge Clark acknowledged Denham’s criminal history, which included convictions for indecent assaults on girls under 14 in 1993 and similar offenses in August 2005.
The judge remarked that if the police officer had not intervened when he did, more serious crimes might have occurred in the future.
The court sentenced Denham to 20 months in prison, with all three charges to run concurrently.
Additionally, four court orders were imposed to restrict Denham’s contact with children under 16 years old.
The court also deducted the 109 days Denham had already spent in custody on remand from his sentence, ensuring that he would serve the remaining time accordingly.
