CHRISTOPHER MATTHEWS DENTIST FROM DORSET EXPOSED FOR CHILD ABUSE AND BESTIALITY IMAGES
In October 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Christopher Matthews, a dentist based in Dorset, who was found to possess highly disturbing images on his personal laptop. These images included explicit material depicting child abuse, bestiality, and extreme pornography, leading to his immediate removal from the dental profession.
Matthews appeared before Bournemouth Crown Court on June 22 of the previous year, where he admitted to possessing and downloading these illicit images.
As a result of his guilty plea, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register, marking a significant and serious consequence for his actions.
The General Dental Council, which oversees the conduct of dental professionals, conducted a disciplinary hearing to address the gravity of his offenses.
During the hearing, the council’s panel, led by Deborah Gough, was informed that Matthews was battling a severe sex addiction.
It was revealed that he had downloaded extreme pornography, including images that depicted penetrative sexual acts involving children.
The panel emphasized that such material is classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of child abuse imagery, and that Matthews’s actions had brought shame and disrepute to the dental profession.
Despite the severity of the crimes, the panel noted that there was no evidence to suggest Matthews had ever posed a risk to his patients or engaged in any professional misconduct that could have endangered those under his care.
The panel acknowledged that his possession of these images was for personal sexual gratification and occurred within his private residence, not in a clinical setting.
Deborah Gough stated, “Mr.
Matthews has brought the dental profession into disrepute through his criminal offending.
He has also breached a fundamental tenet of the profession.” She further explained that, although Matthews had been convicted of serious sexual offenses and was under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until 2022, his actions did not demonstrate a direct threat to patient safety.
In mitigation, the panel recognized Matthews’s remorse and efforts toward rehabilitation.
He actively attends meetings of Sex Addicts Anonymous and has engaged in voluntary work, including cooking and cleaning at a facility that provides food for homeless individuals.
Matthews submitted a detailed reflective statement expressing deep shame and remorse for his actions, acknowledging the profound impact his offending has had on his life and that of his family.
The panel highlighted the seriousness of Matthews’s crimes, emphasizing that child pornography involves the sexual abuse of children for the gratification of others.
They pointed out that his offending was not isolated but involved premeditation and persistence, which compounded the gravity of his actions.
Given the nature of his offenses and their impact on public confidence in the profession, the panel concluded that no conditions or sanctions short of removal would be appropriate.
They determined that the seriousness of the case warranted striking Matthews off the dental register to uphold the standards of conduct expected within the profession and to protect public trust.
