DORSET TEACHER KATHERINE MALYON SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN DORSET
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Dorset, teacher Katherine Malyon, aged 28, has been convicted and sentenced for grooming and engaging in sexual activities with a 15-year-old schoolgirl.The incident, which took place over a period starting in 2017, involved a breach of trust that has left many in the local educational community deeply concerned.
According to court proceedings at Bournemouth Crown Court, Malyon initiated a relationship with the young girl after she confided in her about personal issues.
The grooming process began at the end of the 2017 academic year, when a chance meeting at the school led to the teacher kissing the girl.
This initial contact marked the start of a series of inappropriate interactions that would escalate over time.
Prosecutor Rob Welling detailed that Malyon, despite being trained in safeguarding procedures and fully aware of the risks associated with relationships between staff and pupils, continued to pursue the girl in secrecy.
The court heard that Malyon allowed the girl to visit her at her home and took her on various outings, including trips to London, an aquarium, and a music festival.
These outings were part of the grooming process, which involved sending explicit messages and engaging in sexual activity on at least ten separate occasions.
The misconduct came to light in June of the previous year when a photograph of Malyon kissing the girl was circulated among students at the school.
The girl, then 16, confided in her mother after a friend saw the photo on her laptop.
This revelation prompted the school to suspend Malyon and involve the police.
The court was told that Malyon’s actions represented a clear abuse of trust, especially considering her awareness of the girl’s vulnerability and her professional responsibilities.
During police questioning, Malyon admitted to loving the girl and believed they would marry, a statement that further underscored the inappropriate nature of her conduct.
The judge, Brian Forster QC, emphasized that the girl was vulnerable and needed support from school staff, which Malyon failed to provide once her relationship with the pupil crossed professional boundaries.
Judge Forster highlighted that Malyon’s background as a high-achieving individual from a family dedicated to teaching made her actions particularly shocking.
The judge stated that her behavior was not what one would expect from someone in her position and that her actions had resulted in the loss of her career.
The court also noted that Malyon had betrayed the trust of the pupil, her parents, and the wider community.
Sentencing, Malyon received a prison term of two years and four months for engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
Additionally, she was sentenced to 16 months, to run concurrently, for two counts of sexual activity with a person under 18 while in a position of trust.
She admitted to the charges and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.
Furthermore, she was issued a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, reflecting the seriousness of her misconduct and the ongoing risk she poses.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding and the devastating consequences when trust is broken by those entrusted with the care and education of young people in Dorset.
