DORSET PAEDOPHILE CARL CRACKNELL SENTENCED AFTER POLICE STING IN DORCHESTER

In December 2021, a highly dangerous sex offender from Dorset, Carl Richard Newton Cracknell, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term following a police operation that uncovered his predatory behavior.

Cracknell, aged 36, believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl named Sophie from Worcester via a messaging app, but in reality, he was engaging with an undercover police officer posing as a young girl.

This deception was part of a sting operation aimed at catching individuals attempting to exploit minors.

Cracknell’s offending took place in Dorchester, where the incidents occurred between January 13 and February 25 of the same year.

He had initiated contact with the decoy profile on Kik, a popular messaging platform.

During the exchanges, Cracknell was told that 'Sophie' was only 12 years old, and he falsely claimed to be a 35-year-old man from Dorset.

The court heard that Cracknell’s messages were of a sexual nature, with him expressing a desire to kiss, touch, and even shower with the girl.

He asked explicit questions such as, 'what would you do if my hand was inside your shorts?' and told 'Sophie' that he loved her, instructing her on how to masturbate, claiming she would 'enjoy it.' Prosecutor Timothy Akers detailed the disturbing content of Cracknell’s messages during the hearing at Salisbury Crown Court.

The police investigation culminated on March 19, when officers from Dorset Police attended Cracknell’s residence and seized his Huawei mobile phone.

During police interviews, Cracknell expressed remorse, stating he was 'annoyed' at his actions and claimed he thought he had 'changed.' When informed that the girl he had been speaking to was an undercover officer, Cracknell reportedly gasped and appeared visibly relieved.

Cracknell admitted to the charges and acknowledged deleting the Kik messenger app from his phone, despite being prohibited from doing so under his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The court was told that Cracknell’s criminal history dates back to 2016, with previous convictions involving indecent images of children.

His record also includes multiple breaches of his SHPO and similar offenses, indicating a pattern of concerning behavior.

Judge Robert Pawson addressed Cracknell directly, highlighting the severity of his criminal record and the nature of his offenses.

He stated, 'You have a very worrying criminal history going back to 2016 when you were first found with indecent images of children.' The judge emphasized that Cracknell had groomed his intended victim, seeking to build her trust for exploitative purposes.

The pre-sentence report indicated that Cracknell posed a high risk of causing serious harm to female children.

As a result, Cracknell was sentenced to nine years in prison, comprising four years of immediate custody and an additional five-year extension.

The court also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of his mobile phone to prevent further misuse.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predatory individuals like Cracknell.

In addition to the December 2021 case, Cracknell’s criminal history includes a previous conviction in August 2019, when he was caught attempting to groom a young girl online.

At that time, Cracknell, then aged 34 and residing in Weymouth, pleaded guilty to multiple sexual offenses.

The court was told that in October 2018, he had contacted a profile he believed belonged to a ten-year-old girl, explicitly expressing his intent to groom her for sexual activity.

He pressured her to send nude pictures and even sent an explicit image of himself.

Cracknell, who had prior convictions for possession of indecent images of children and breaches of sexual harm prevention orders, instructed the girl on how to masturbate and tried to arrange a meeting.

However, the 'girl' was actually an adult member of the paedophile hunting team 'Phoenix Predator Hunters,' who posed online as a child to catch offenders.

Following this operation, evidence was handed over to police, leading to Cracknell’s arrest and seizure of his devices.

His guilty plea resulted in an 18-month custodial sentence, and his Sexual Harm Prevention Order was extended, along with his registration on the sex offenders register.

Further back, in April 2018, Cracknell, then aged 33 and living on Blackberry Lane in Weymouth, was sentenced to four months in prison for breaching a court order that banned him from possessing devices with internet access.

Police found a Compaq laptop at his home, which he admitted to purchasing six weeks prior, violating the order issued by Bournemouth Crown Court in 2016.

This earlier order had been imposed after Cracknell was convicted of possessing indecent photographs of children, extreme pornography, and indecent pseudo-photographs.

Despite the ban, Cracknell was found in possession of a laptop and a mobile phone with internet capabilities, demonstrating a pattern of defiance and ongoing risk to the public.

These cases collectively highlight the persistent danger posed by Carl Cracknell, a known sex offender from Dorset, whose repeated breaches and grooming behaviors have prompted severe legal consequences.

His actions have been met with firm judicial responses, reflecting the seriousness with which the justice system treats offenses involving the exploitation of children.
