BEN THOMAS AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN YORKSHIRE

A convicted paedophile and piano instructor from Yorkshire has been found in possession of an alarming collection of tens of thousands of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse.

The extent of his crimes was uncovered after authorities discovered that Ben Thomas, aged 30, had engaged in highly disturbing activities involving his young students, some as young as eight years old.

Thomas, who resided on Westbourne Grove in Hessle, was involved in teaching piano lessons to children, during which he secretly recorded and captured explicit content.

His heinous acts included filming upskirt videos of his students during lessons, often without their knowledge or consent.

The investigation into his activities was triggered when the mother of one of his eight-year-old pupils discovered inappropriate messages exchanged between her daughter and Thomas.

These messages included requests for videos of her blowing him a kiss and other suggestive content.

Additionally, Thomas had asked the young girl to dance naked for him.

Following this discovery, the mother confronted Thomas, warning him to cease all contact with her daughter.

He complied temporarily but soon after, she contacted the police.

Authorities responded swiftly, seizing his mobile phone and laptop, which were found to contain a staggering 26,461 images and 445 videos categorized into various levels of severity, including 1,625 of the most serious category involving penetrative sexual acts with children.

The victims depicted in these images ranged in age from as young as three years old, as revealed during the proceedings at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday, August 5.

The court heard that Thomas had a total of 16 students who fell victim to his exploitation.

Between June and July of the previous year, he recorded 64 videos of these children, some of whom he taught at a school in North Lincolnshire, while others were filmed at his home or the children’s residences.

The court was shown evidence that during lessons, Thomas would ask young girls to lean over the piano to examine its inner workings, all the while secretly filming them with his mobile device.

None of the children were aware of his covert filming.

Prosecutor Nigel Clive QC explained that Thomas’s arrest was initiated after the mother of one victim found inappropriate WhatsApp messages between her daughter and Thomas.

The messages included pictures and videos of his cats, as well as requests for her to send him a video of her blowing a kiss.

The messages also contained footage of the girl playing with his cats, during which he asked her to perform gymnastics moves such as the crab and splits.

When confronted, Thomas ceased contact but was subsequently reported to the police.

Police officers arrested Thomas and seized his devices, which revealed a systematic and extensive collection of illicit material.

During his initial police interview on August 11 of the previous year, Thomas provided the unlock codes for his devices.

However, during a subsequent interview on December 21, he chose to remain silent in response to questions.

Despite this, the evidence on his devices was sufficient to secure a conviction.

The impact of Thomas’s actions was vividly conveyed through victim impact statements read aloud in court.

One parent expressed concern over her daughter’s loss of trust, noting that she was once a confident girl but now refuses to wear skirts or dresses, even in summer.

Another parent highlighted that their daughter has become more suspicious of teachers and men, feeling betrayed by someone she once trusted.

These statements underscored the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon the young victims.

In mitigation, Alexander Leach QC acknowledged that Thomas’s descent into viewing internet pornography had led to the creation of indecent images of children.

He emphasized that the most serious aggravating factors included the breach of trust, the fact that the children were known to Thomas, and the number of victims involved.

Leach also revealed that Thomas had access to internet pornography and unregulated file-sharing platforms from the age of 11, which contributed to his offending behavior.

Despite his past actions, Thomas has engaged in therapy and shown some effort toward rehabilitation.

Sentencing, Recorder Kelly addressed Thomas directly, stating that the consequences of his actions extend beyond himself.

She emphasized that the children’s suffering was real and that each image represented a child who had been sexually abused.

The judge pointed out that Thomas had lost his employment, his fiancée called off their engagement, and his reputation was in ruins.

She warned that the impact of his crimes would stay with him for the rest of his life, and he alone was responsible for his downfall.

Furthermore, Thomas was handed a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits him from using any device capable of accessing the internet, deleting messages, or having contact with females under 16.

He is also required to register as a sex offender for ten years.

Detective Constable Becky McInnis from Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, praising the bravery of the victims and their families.

She highlighted that Thomas’s deceitful abuse of trust preyed on some of society’s most vulnerable members and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting children from such predators.
