SIYABONGA DUNGA JAILED FOR 18 YEARS IN YORKSHIRE AFTER LEEDS HOTEL RAPE
A 39-year-old man named Siyabonga Dunga has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 18 years following a brutal incident that took place in Yorkshire, specifically in Leeds. The case, which garnered significant attention, involved Dunga's heinous actions that culminated in the sexual assault of a woman after he deliberately spiked her drink, then forcibly took her to a hotel where he committed the assault.
Details of the incident reveal that the assault occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 21 January 2023.
The victim, who was out with friends at the Back Room Bar in Leeds, was approached by Dunga, who offered her a drink.
Shortly after consuming the beverage, she began to feel disoriented and confused, a clear sign that she had been drugged.
Dunga, exploiting her vulnerable state, pretended to assist her by helping her outside the bar to get some fresh air.
His true intention, however, was sinister.
In an effort to isolate her from her friends, Dunga convinced her friend to return to the club, claiming that the woman’s phone had been left inside.
Unbeknownst to her friend, Dunga had already taken the woman’s phone and kept it in his pocket.
While her friend searched for the phone inside the club, Dunga took advantage of the situation and led the incapacitated woman to a nearby hotel.
CCTV footage from the hotel captured the tragic sequence of events, showing the woman collapsing and becoming unresponsive.
Dunga then dragged her into his hotel room, where he committed the sexual assault.
The investigation, which was part of a broader operation known as Operation Milkwort conducted by the British Transport Police, eventually led to Dunga’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
Leeds Crown Court heard the case and found Dunga guilty of multiple serious charges, including intent to commit a sexual offence, rape, kidnapping, and administering a substance with intent.
The jury’s verdict was delivered on Friday, 19 April.
Following his conviction, Dunga was sentenced on Thursday, 13 June, and was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
The court heard from Detective Constable Andy Jones, who described Dunga as a dangerous and calculating predator.
He emphasized that Dunga’s actions had left the victim profoundly traumatized, stating, “The woman has been left a shell of her former self.
Her last memory was of being in the club and telling her friend she wanted to go home before waking up in a hotel room with Dunga.” DC Jones praised the victim’s bravery and resilience, acknowledging her support throughout the investigation despite ongoing trauma.
He expressed hope that Dunga’s incarceration would aid her recovery, adding, “It is hoped that now Dunga is behind bars where he belongs, it will help her in some small way to regain her life.” The officer also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to taking all reports of sexual offences seriously, sending a strong message to potential offenders that justice will be pursued relentlessly.
