WARRINGTON MAN OCTAVIAN TANTAU JAILED FOR GROOMING PLOT IN PAEDOPHILE HUNTER STING
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Octavian Tantau, a 30-year-old resident of Warrington, has been sentenced to prison after attempting to groom a girl he believed was just 13 years old.The incident unfolded over nearly a year, during which Tantau engaged in a series of sexually explicit communications, sending thousands of messages, images, and videos in an effort to manipulate and exploit what he thought was a vulnerable young girl.
According to court proceedings held at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, August 31, Tantau’s actions came to light through a paedophile hunter operation.
A volunteer had set up an online profile, which was first contacted by Tantau in December 2019.
Over the course of ten months, he persistently bombarded the fake account with lewd messages, often encouraging the fictitious girl to perform sexual acts.
The messages, exchanged via the Kik and Skout messaging platforms, revealed a pattern of disturbing behaviour, including attempts to persuade her to meet and engage in sexual activity.
During the exchanges, Tantau asked whether her father checked her phone, claimed to have had sexual encounters with girls aged 13 or 14 in the past, and even suggested that he could teach her what to do sexually.
He also proposed going to the cinema together, further demonstrating his manipulative intent.
The defendant also sent numerous indecent images, including photographs of himself exposing his genitals, images of him naked in the bath, and videos depicting adults engaged in sexual acts.
His criminal activities culminated in a confrontation at his home on Ashfield Gardens in Warrington in September 2020.
The paedophile hunters traced him after he shared selfies and photos of his car, which displayed his registration plate.
The group live-streamed a 30-minute video on Facebook, during which they confronted Tantau.
Police were subsequently called, leading to his arrest.
During police interviews, Tantau admitted to his offending but claimed that he did not see any harm in what he considered to be normal chat.
Evidence presented in court comprised over 1,000 pages of screenshots containing his explicit messages, which painted a clear picture of his grooming behaviour.
Despite having no prior convictions, Tantau’s actions were deemed highly serious.
His partner of seven years was present in court, visibly distressed as he was led away to begin his sentence.
In sentencing, Judge Swinnerton emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “There was no real 13-year-old child who you were communicating with, but that doesn’t alter the serious fact that you believed you were communicating with a 13-year-old child.
That conversation went on for some nine months.
There are thousands of messages exchanged between the two of you, messages which were frequently heavily sexualised in their content.
You did discuss at length what you wanted to do to her should you meet.
It’s highly aggravated by the fact that you send numerous pictures of yourself and others, and went on for some time.
This was all done for your sexual gratification.” Judge Swinnerton further noted that Tantau had used considerable grooming tactics and that his behaviour warranted a custodial sentence.
Consequently, he was sentenced to two years in prison, with the possibility of serving up to half of that term before being released on licence.
Additionally, he was handed a 10-year notification requirement, a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offences are treated, especially when they involve the manipulation of minors through online platforms.
