STUART ASHCROFT FROM WARRINGTON AND WESTY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE POSSESSING 537 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Warrington and Westy, Stuart Ashcroft, a 46-year-old resident of Dover Road in Westy, has narrowly avoided imprisonment despite admitting to possessing a significant collection of indecent images of children. The case was brought before Warrington Crown Court, where Ashcroft appeared on a Friday, visibly ashamed as prosecutor Peter Moss detailed the extent of his online activities.

According to court records, Ashcroft had accessed numerous websites, including one called ‘Child Rape,’ which is known to host and distribute abusive images of minors. Over the course of his online activity, he downloaded a total of 537 indecent photographs depicting young girls aged between seven and 15. The images ranged in severity, with 534 classified as level one, which are considered the least severe, showing children in states of undress. One image was classified as level three, and two as level four, with level five being the most disturbing and severe category.

Prosecutor Moss explained that the investigation into Ashcroft’s activities began as early as 1999. However, it was not until 2006 that a review by the paedophile online investigation team generated a new list of suspects, including Ashcroft. This review also identified suspects from whom payments had not been received but who showed clear interest in child exploitation images. The court was told that Ashcroft’s online activity was traced back to him after he used his credit card details at 12:40 a.m. on May 19, 1999, to access ‘Child Rape,’ a website known for containing abusive content involving children. Interestingly, no payment was made, leading investigators to believe Ashcroft may have lost his nerve at that point.

Further police action was taken on September 4, 2007, when authorities raided Ashcroft’s residence. During the search, they seized his computer equipment and floppy disks, uncovering his disturbing collection of images involving minors. Ashcroft expressed genuine remorse during police interviews, describing himself as ‘shattered’ by his actions. He admitted to searching for and viewing child abuse images and acknowledged having a voyeuristic interest in the photographs.

Representing Ashcroft, defense lawyer Nova Howarth stated that at the time of the offences, her client lacked a full understanding of the suffering endured by the victims depicted in the images. She emphasized that he now comprehends the gravity of his actions.

Judge Stephen Clarke sentenced Ashcroft, imposing a minimum two-year sexual offence prevention order. This order restricts him from using the Internet for anything other than work or educational purposes, prohibits access to chat rooms, and bans him from keeping computer storage devices. Additionally, Ashcroft was given a community rehabilitation order with a two-year supervision requirement, ordered to participate in the Northumbria Sex Offender Programme, and mandated to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years. He was also explicitly barred from working with children.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Clarke described the case as a “horrendous crime,” emphasizing the exploitation of children for the entertainment of others. While acknowledging that the images in this case may not be as severe as in some other cases, he stressed that the children involved are real victims, and the long-term impact on them remains uncertain. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such offenses are regarded, and Ashcroft’s case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online child exploitation.
