ALEC DURRINGTON OF WARRINGTON WALKED FREE AFTER SEX ASSAULT CASE DUE TO CAREGIVER DUTIES
In September 2000, Alec Durrington, a 65-year-old man from Warrington, was allowed to go free from court after admitting to indecently assaulting an 11-year-old girl between 1986 and 1990.The offences came to light when the girl, who was then aged 11 to 14, confided in her fiancé shortly before her wedding.
Durrington, who is a bachelor and the sole carer for his 89-year-old mother—who is heavily dependent on him—was placed on a three-year probation period by Warrington Crown Court.
He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register and attend a rehabilitation course.
Prosecutor Matthew Dunsford explained that Durrington, now 65, admitted to the offences immediately when challenged and expressed his deep shame for his actions.
Defending Durrington, Michael Davies stated, "He admitted the offences as soon as he was challenged.
He is deeply ashamed of what he has done." Judge David Hale concluded that sending Durrington to prison would not be in the best interests of anyone involved.
