ABERDEEN MAN NIALL KELLY SENTENCED FOR INDECENT IMAGES IN ABERDEEN
In a case that has drawn significant attention in Aberdeen, Niall Kelly, a 29-year-old resident of Hillcrest, Dyce, has been sentenced to community-based penalties after being found in possession of indecent photographs of children.The incident, which came to light through police investigations, revealed that Kelly had accumulated a total of 75 images and three videos depicting child exploitation.
Kelly had previously admitted guilt to the charges of possessing these illicit images, which were stored at various addresses across the north-east of Scotland between January 2013 and August 2017.
The court was informed that the material was discovered during routine checks and investigations into online activity.
During the court proceedings, Kelly’s defence attorney, Gregor Kelly, explained that his client had worked offshore in Romania, where workers often exchanged movies and media content.
He emphasized that Kelly was genuinely remorseful for his actions, stating, “He is sincerely sorry,” and added, “He accepts he has a problem and is doing something about it.” However, Sheriff William Summers was clear in his remarks, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
“This is not a victimless crime,” the sheriff stated, underscoring the harm caused by such offenses and the importance of accountability.
In lieu of a custodial sentence, Sheriff Summers ordered Kelly to undergo three years of supervised release, during which he must adhere to strict monitoring and reporting requirements.
Additionally, Kelly was sentenced to complete 180 hours of unpaid community work, reflecting the court’s attempt to balance punishment with rehabilitation.
Furthermore, Kelly was placed under the obligations of the Sex Offenders Act for a period of three years, requiring him to notify authorities of any changes in his circumstances.
The court also mandated his participation in the “Moving Forward Making Changes” programme, aimed at addressing underlying issues and preventing future offending behavior.
