ABERDEEN SEX OFFENDER EWAN MCRAE SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR DEPRAVED ABUSE OF YOUNG BOYS
In March 2012, a disturbing case involving a serial sex offender from Aberdeen culminated in a severe legal punishment.Ewan McRae, aged 41 at the time, was sentenced to a lengthy term of 12 years in prison after he admitted to the sexual abuse of two young boys over a span of several years.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crimes and McRae's prior criminal history.
Initially, McRae was scheduled to stand trial at the High Court in Aberdeen on the Monday preceding his sentencing.
However, he failed to appear in court, which led to a change in proceedings.

He described McRae’s conduct as a “course of conduct over a period of years” involving “the most appalling and horrifying sexual abuse of two young boys.” The judge emphasized the depraved nature of McRae’s actions, noting that he engaged in “disgusting and depraved sexual conduct” towards the victims.
Lord Uist pointed out that McRae showed a complete disregard for the wellbeing of the children and the potential long-term effects of his actions.
Lord Uist also highlighted the breach of trust involved in the crimes, as McRae was in a position of authority and trust over the young boys at the time of the abuse.
The fact that McRae had initially denied the allegations and only admitted guilt shortly before sentencing was also noted, with the judge expressing concern over the inconvenience caused to the court, potential jurors, and the victims who were prepared to give evidence.
McRae’s criminal record was extensive, dating back to 1988, and included three convictions for assault.
He was also registered as a sex offender, reflecting the seriousness of his past convictions.
The judge acknowledged that while McRae’s record was mainly for dishonesty-related offenses, the presence of assault convictions and the nature of his recent crimes warranted a significant custodial sentence.
In his remarks, Lord Uist reaffirmed the judiciary’s stance that those who commit sexual offenses against children should expect lengthy prison terms when brought to justice.
The court’s decision was also influenced by McRae’s late guilty pleas and his failure to appear for trial, which caused additional delays and complications.
As part of the sentence, McRae was informed that, under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, he would now be subject to strict notification requirements.
