JOSEPH SHAW'S CRIME IN WARRINGTON: VETERAN TIES DISABLED WOMAN TO BED AND FILMS SEX ACTS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Warrington, Joseph Shaw, a former armed forces veteran, has been convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a severely disabled woman.

The incident took place in his flat, where Shaw lured the victim and her friend, both of whom have significant learning difficulties, into a situation that would forever alter their lives.

According to court proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, the victim, a 21-year-old woman, has a mental age of just eight years and an IQ that places her in the bottom 0.1 percent of the population, indicating a profound level of intellectual impairment.

Her condition rendered her unable to give legal consent to the sexual acts she was subjected to, which makes Shaw’s actions particularly egregious.

Prosecutor Peter Wilson detailed how Shaw initially met the victim’s friend through the online dating platform Badoo.

The two women, both with learning difficulties—though the friend’s were less severe—began communicating with Shaw via WhatsApp.

Their exchanges included sexually explicit voice notes and video chats, which eventually led Shaw to visit the women at their flat on one occasion.

In the summer of 2018, Shaw extended an invitation to the two women to visit his home in Warrington.

He arranged for a taxi to pick them up and bring them to his residence.

The three spent time drinking beer in Shaw’s bedroom before the victim’s father arrived to pick her up, leaving her alone with Shaw.

It was during this visit that Shaw admitted to police and probation officers that he and the victim had begun kissing.

He further confessed that he had tied her to his bed, although he later unbound her when she requested to go to the toilet.

Shaw also admitted to undressing her, engaging in sexual touching, and that she had performed a sex act on him.

He took photographs and videos of these acts but later deleted them.

Despite putting on a condom, Shaw claimed that he sensed the victim was uncomfortable, as her body language indicated she did not want to continue.

The pair then dressed again, and the victim called her friend to be picked up.

Her father returned to find her standing outside Shaw’s home.

The victim later confided in her mother that a man had done something to her against her will, prompting her to report the incident to authorities.

She described suffering from flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional distress, including crying and seeking comfort from her parents.

She expressed that the experience had changed her personality, making her more withdrawn and quiet, and she recounted how she sometimes breaks down in tears, overwhelmed by the trauma inflicted upon her.

Shaw, who previously served in the army but was dishonorably discharged following a 2018 drink-driving conviction, later worked as a residential support worker for young people with mental health issues.

His defense attorney, William Staunton, argued that the sexual activity occurred during what was essentially a blind date, and that Shaw was in a difficult personal state at the time.

Staunton explained that Shaw was struggling with depression, had lost his military career—an achievement he took great pride in—and was in a downward spiral fueled by alcohol abuse.

He expressed remorse for Shaw’s actions and acknowledged the impact on the victim.

During the court hearing, Shaw, aged 28, appeared visibly shaken as he admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder that impaired her ability to make informed choices.

He was sentenced to serve two-thirds of a seven-year and eight-month prison term before being eligible for release.

The judge, Judge Andrew Menary KC, emphasized the severity of the victim’s disabilities, noting her very low IQ and mental age, and highlighted Shaw’s awareness of her vulnerabilities.

As part of his sentence, Shaw was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, placed under a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, and was given an indefinite restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.

The case underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and highlights the devastating consequences of abusing trust and power in such circumstances.
