WILLIAM LAMBERT FROM CHEAM AND SUTTON SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Cheam and Sutton, William Lambert, aged 75, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes committed between 1985 and 1987.Lambert, who was working as a gravedigger at St Dunstan's Church in Cheam during the time of the offenses, exploited his position and the trust of vulnerable young girls to carry out his predatory acts.
According to court proceedings at Croydon Crown Court, Lambert transformed an ordinary shed located within the church grounds into an unofficial youth club, where he lured and manipulated four girls aged between 11 and 14.
His method involved gaining their confidence by listening to their personal problems, creating an illusion of friendship and understanding.
Once trust was established, Lambert introduced them to themes of witchcraft and the occult, further entrenching his influence over his victims.
He then falsely claimed to possess magical powers capable of improving their lives, promising that they could attain these powers themselves if they engaged in sexual acts with him.
This manipulation was part of his broader pattern of abuse, which left lasting scars on those affected.
One woman, now in her 30s, courageously came forward during a counseling session in 2009 to disclose the abuse she endured at Lambert’s hands.
Her testimony prompted police investigations, leading officers from the Metropolitan Police to identify and locate three additional victims who had suffered at his hands decades earlier.
Lambert faced multiple charges, including two counts of procuring girls to have sexual intercourse by false pretenses and representations, rape, and two counts of indecent assault.
The court found him guilty on all counts, and he was subsequently sentenced to 11 years in prison during a hearing held on a recent Friday.
Detective Inspector Neil Matthews commented on the case, emphasizing the Metropolitan Police’s commitment to pursuing justice for victims of sexual abuse.
He praised the bravery of those who came forward, stating, “I wish to praise the victims for their courage in coming forward to give evidence against Lambert.
I hope that this will bring a degree of closure to those affected by his actions.” This case underscores the importance of speaking out against abuse and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring offenders to justice, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
