February 2012 Man caught in Sutton with more than 66,000 child porn images avoids jail A man caught with more than 66,000 images of child-sex abuse on his home computer has escaped an immediate jail sentence. James Barlow, 51, of Ringstead Road, Sutton, pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court to 16 counts of possession of indecent videos and images of children, which he had downloaded from the internet using file sharing software. Thousands of the images found were level four and five – which can include images of child rape. He also had extreme pornographic movies involving people having sex with dogs and horses. Croydon Crown Court heard just after 6am on April 11 last year police raided Mr Barlow’s home in Sutton after suspected downloads of illegal images had been traced to his computer IP address. Barlow originally used the software to download music but he had started to use it to look at child pornography. The court was told he searched for images of girls under the age of 12 for his sexual gratification. He told police after he was arrested: “I am glad I have been caught. It has put a stop to it. I tried to put a stop to it myself. I deleted a lot of material, but its an addiction I have been unable to control. He had referred himself to the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a child protection charity dedicated to reducing the risk of children being sexually abused. Judge Tim Stow said: “These offences are serious as they provide the evil people degrading and abusing these children with a market.” Barlow was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work, and given a sexual offences prevention order.
