MARTIN MARKO OF MERSEYSIDE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL AND VIOLENT CRIMES IN SEAFORTH

A court has officially recognized Martin Marko, a 35-year-old man from Merseyside, as a significant threat to women due to his abusive and possessive behavior, which culminated in a brutal assault on a woman in his Seaforth Road flat.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of August 15 last year, involved a prolonged and terrifying ordeal that lasted over three hours, during which Marko subjected his victim to a series of violent and degrading acts.

According to court reports, Marko held the woman captive within his flat, where he issued threats to kill her and forced her to strip.

The assault escalated as he sexually assaulted her, brandished a kitchen knife in her face, and physically attacked her with a shoe.

The violence did not stop there; he also choked her, punched her, and threw a bowl filled with urine at her, leaving her in a state of extreme fear and distress.

The entire sequence of events was captured on CCTV footage, which showed the woman cowering and falling to her knees with her hands clasped in a praying gesture, clearly overwhelmed by the trauma inflicted upon her.

During the attack, the woman made two desperate attempts to escape by climbing out of a first-floor window.

However, she was unable to leave the locked flat, and Marko continued his assault upon her.

Following the incident, Marko sent numerous text messages—at least 43—some of which contained apologies, while others were menacing threats aimed at dissuading her from reporting the crime to authorities.

He also urged police officers to review the CCTV footage, which clearly depicted his violent actions.

Marko appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, March 18, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, and making threats to kill.

The judge, David Aubrey, delivered a stern judgment, emphasizing the severity of Marko’s actions and the impact on his victim.

The judge described the victim as being petrified and in such fear that she contemplated escaping through a window of the flat, which was located on the first floor.

Judge Aubrey characterized Marko as an abusive and possessive individual, noting his demanding and controlling behavior.

He condemned Marko for treating his victim as an object, degrading her, and subjecting her to violence and humiliation.

The judge underscored the importance of examining the CCTV footage, which was central to the case, and highlighted how Marko’s treatment of women, especially this particular victim, was deeply troubling.

Over the course of the assault, Marko brandished a knife multiple times, threatening her with it and gesturing in a stabbing motion, even threatening to kill her on one occasion.

The court heard that the victim was visibly terrified, backing away and cowering in a corner during the attack.

Marko also threw urine over her, slapped her with a shoe, and inflicted injuries that the court reviewed.

The judge noted that Marko had instructed her to remove her clothing on several occasions, further emphasizing the abusive nature of the assault.

In the aftermath, Marko continued his harassment by sending numerous texts—some menacing, others seemingly conciliatory—aimed at silencing her and preventing her from speaking to the police.

Despite the pressure, the victim demonstrated remarkable courage by providing a statement to law enforcement, refusing to retract it despite Marko’s efforts to intimidate her.

Throughout the proceedings, Marko attempted to blame his victim and minimize his culpability, especially during interviews with probation officers, where he attributed his actions to influence from alcohol and drugs.

The judge acknowledged that Marko showed some remorse but warned that this remorse must be viewed critically, given his prior behavior and attitude.

Judge Aubrey described the offenses as sustained, involving violence, threats, and degradation over an extended period.

He noted Marko’s deep-rooted issues with controlling women and emphasized that, despite his relatively limited criminal record, his actions posed a significant risk to the public, particularly women.

The court concluded that Marko’s behavior demonstrated a dangerous pattern, warranting a severe sentence.

As a result, Marko was sentenced to a 12-year extended prison term, with nine years to be served in custody and an additional three years on license.

Furthermore, a restraining order was issued to prevent him from contacting the victim, ensuring her safety moving forward.

Marko’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by abusive individuals and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions in Merseyside.
