TERRY GODWIN'S HORRIBLE CRIMES IN MERSEYSIDE LEAVE VICTIM WITH DECADES OF TRAUMA
A deeply disturbing case has come to light involving Terry Godwin, a man from Merseyside who committed heinous sexual offenses against a young girl over a prolonged period. The abuse, which began when the victim was a child, persisted for years and has left an indelible mark on her life, casting a long shadow of pain and suffering that she has carried for decades.
According to court proceedings held at Liverpool Crown Court, the victim, now 39 years old, finally found the courage to come forward and report her ordeal in 2022.
Her testimony revealed that the abuse started when she was between 12 and 19 years old, with Godwin subjecting her to more than 250 separate incidents of sexual assault.
The court heard that Godwin, who resides on Corwen Close in Moreton, Wirral, engaged in acts of sexual misconduct that included masturbating in front of her and instructing her to perform sexual acts.
In an attempt to silence her, he also paid her money, a desperate effort to prevent her from revealing the truth.
The victim’s statement, read aloud during the trial, was filled with pain and anguish.
She described how the trauma has haunted her throughout her life, saying, "For as long as I can remember, I have had this horrible, dark shadow over my life.
It has affected me in ways it is hard to begin to explain.
The shame I felt, I still feel.
I have led an extremely lonely life and I have never truly known happiness.
I have considered whether it would be easier not to be here.
The trauma has stolen my childhood and a significant part of my adult life." She further expressed her fears about the future, stating, "I believe this man to be a danger to young girls.
I am already thinking about the time when he walks the streets again and I am worried what he might be capable of." Her words underscore the lasting impact of Godwin’s actions and the ongoing concern for her safety and well-being.
In court, it was revealed that Godwin had no prior convictions before these offenses.
He admitted to committing a total of 42 child sex offenses, including indecent assault and gross indecency with a child.
His defense lawyer, Rebecca Smith, acknowledged his remorse, stating, "It is quite clear that he has always offered an apology.
It may not be worth much, but he has always reflected and indicated not only an apology for his behaviour but also how he is disgusted with the offences he committed." Additionally, it was disclosed that Godwin has been dealing with significant health issues, including a rare swallowing condition called achalasia, which has required biopsies and surgery.
His legal team argued that his health problems might complicate his incarceration.
On August 20, 2023, Godwin appeared via video link from HMP Liverpool to face sentencing.
The court sentenced him to seven years in prison, with the stipulation that he must serve at least two-thirds of that sentence before being eligible for parole.
He was also handed an additional year on license, along with a 20-year sexual harm prevention order and a lifelong restraining order prohibiting any contact with his victim.
Furthermore, he is required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
Judge Neil Flewitt KC emphasized the severity of the psychological harm inflicted upon the victim, stating, "There has been read to me a particularly moving victim personal statement in which your victim has described how what you did has cast a horrible, dark shadow over the entirety of her life.
She continues to live with what she describes as the mental torture of what you did to her.
These feelings are with her every day of her life." The judge’s words reflect the profound and lasting damage caused by Godwin’s actions, and the court’s determination to impose a strict sentence to protect the community and prevent further harm.
