JONATHAN SWIFT AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CAERPHILLY
A man named Jonathan Swift, aged 34, has been convicted of a serious sexual assault that took place in Caerphilly, causing widespread concern and distress within the community. The incident occurred on the evening of April 9, around 5:45 pm, when Swift approached a 16-year-old girl he did not know while she was on the street.
According to reports, Swift initiated contact by asking the young girl for a lighter.
He then proceeded to inquire about her relationship status, asking if she was single.
When she responded that she was only 16 years old, Swift made a comment suggesting she appeared older than her age.
He also lied about his own age during this initial interaction.
The situation escalated when Swift began to follow her, and at one point, he grabbed her hand and pulled her onto a nearby bench.
The girl attempted to extricate herself and leave the scene, but Swift persisted by grabbing her again and forcibly kissing her.
She pushed him away, expressing her desire to go home, but he refused to let her go.
Instead, he pulled her back onto the bench and kissed her on the lips, forcibly inserting his tongue into her mouth.
Prosecutor Ffion Tomos detailed the assault, stating that Swift then placed his hands down her top, touching her breasts despite her ongoing struggle to free herself.
The victim described the assault as painful, and she managed to pull his hand out of her clothing.
During the attack, Swift exposed his penis for a period of two to three minutes and asked her if they could go somewhere more private.
Fortunately, a passerby walked past at this moment, prompting Swift to put his penis away.
Despite the interruption, Swift continued his assault by placing his hands down her trousers and engaging in sexual activity.
The young girl later described this part of the attack as painful and managed to pull his hand out of her trousers.
He then asked her to come to his house, but she repeatedly insisted she wanted to go home and tried to walk away.
However, Swift kept attempting to pull her back, even asking if she was on Snapchat before grabbing her phone and entering his own contact details into her device.
Eventually, the girl was able to escape and sought help by messaging a friend.
The police were called, and Swift was arrested the following day at his residence on Snowden Court.
During police interviews, he claimed that he was intoxicated at the time and that the sexual contact was consensual.
He later pleaded guilty to charges of assault by penetration and sexual assault.
It was revealed during the court proceedings that Swift had a troubling history of sexual offenses.
In 2010, he was convicted of sexual assault after attacking a woman at a bus stop.
He also breached a Sexual Harm Prevention Order by approaching a 13-year-old girl.
In 2017, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with a child under 16 in an alleyway.
At the time of the recent offense, Swift was on licence, which added to the severity of his breach of legal restrictions.
A victim personal statement was read aloud in court, in which the 16-year-old girl described the profound impact the assault had on her life.
She explained that her independence and confidence have been severely damaged, leading her to avoid leaving the house alone and to always stay with friends out of fear of another attack.
She expressed her loss of trust in strangers and shared that she often struggles to focus at school because her mind keeps returning to that traumatic day.
The victim also described how the incident affects her sleep, with flashbacks and nightmares that make her feel as if she is reliving the assault.
She stated that she constantly looks over her shoulder, worried about being attacked again, and emphasized that no teenager should endure such an experience.
She expressed relief that Swift is now in prison and stated her hope that he remains there, describing him as a dangerous man who should not harm others.
In mitigation, defense lawyer David Rees told the court that Swift was deeply remorseful for his actions and that he was intoxicated at the time of the offense.
He also noted that Swift had been publicly identified as a convicted sex offender in November of the previous year, which had led to repercussions, abuse, and threats from others.
Judge Lucy Crowther delivered the sentencing, emphasizing the seriousness of Swift’s actions and his lack of understanding of the harm caused.
She pointed out that Swift attempted to minimize and justify his behavior, which she described as characteristic of a sexual predator.
The judge stated that Swift poses a significant risk of serious harm to the public, particularly to young girls and women, and labeled him a dangerous offender.
As a result, Swift was sentenced to eight years in prison, with an extended license period of six years.
He is expected to serve two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being considered for parole.
Additionally, he was subjected to a 30-year restraining order and will remain under the requirements of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offender notification obligations for life.
