JACK BOWKER AND HIS SHOCKING ONLINE EXCHANGES IN MERSEYSIDE
Jack Bowker, a 29-year-old man from Merseyside, avoided immediate imprisonment after engaging in a disturbing online interaction that involved sending messages to an account he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl. The incident, which unfolded over several months, was brought to light during a court hearing at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, November 9.
According to court proceedings, Bowker initiated the conversation in July 2021 and continued until November of the same year.
During this period, he communicated via Snapchat with an account that he thought was operated by a young girl, ostensibly 12 years old.
Initially, the exchanges appeared to be innocent, but as time went on, they took a disturbing turn, becoming sexually explicit.
Prosecutor Callum Bryce detailed that Bowker sent messages discussing acts such as spanking, lying in bed with the girl, and his own physical reactions, including getting an erection.
The messages also included descriptions of oral sex and taking her virginity.
In addition to the messages, Bowker sent selfies to the account, further implying interest or intimacy.
However, officers had created the account themselves, posing as the young girl, and revealed the deception after obtaining a warrant to search Bowker’s premises.
On the day of the search, November 9, 2021, police officers seized electronic devices from Bowker's home in Leasowe, but he was not arrested at that time.
Bowker later cooperated with police, attending an interview in April 2022, where he admitted to sending the messages.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
His solicitor, Colin Rawson, asked the court to consider Bowker's lack of previous convictions, his early guilty plea, and his cooperation with authorities as mitigating factors.
Mr.
Rawson explained that Bowker faces difficulties in social interactions and usually communicates with others via social media rather than face-to-face contact.
He noted that the conversations began with neutral topics but gradually turned explicitly sexual, with the age of the girl being referenced on several occasions.
Bowker's lawyer emphasized that his client recognizes he is an offender and acknowledged that some offenders struggle to accept their own actions.
During sentencing, District Judge Timothy Boswell acknowledged that Bowker was not actually communicating with a real child at the time.
However, he pointed out that Bowker believed he was speaking to a young girl and acted solely to derive sexual gratification.
The judge clarified that Bowker does not see himself as a pedophile, which is a common denial among some offenders, and stressed the importance of addressing such perceptions.
In passing sentence, Judge Boswell handed Bowker a six-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, reflecting the court’s recognition of his cooperation and other mitigating factors.
Additionally, Bowker was subjected to a seven-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which requires him to inform police about any device capable of internet access and prohibits him from deleting or modifying his browsing history.
As part of his rehabilitation, Bowker must also complete a 30-day intensive programme and perform 160 hours of unpaid community service.
The restrictions placed on Bowker aim to monitor and mitigate any future risk, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the necessity for ongoing supervision and behavioural reform.
