ROTHERHAM MAN DAMIEN KELLY CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE
In a case that has drawn significant attention in South Yorkshire, Damien Kelly, a resident of Rotherham, was caught in a sting operation conducted by self-styled paedophile hunters. The incident unfolded after Kelly attempted to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old girl, only to be confronted outside his parents' home by members of the vigilante group.
According to reports, Kelly was followed after he left a Tesco car park in Barnsley on April 1, 2018.
He had arranged to meet a girl named April, who was actually an online decoy set up by the group One Reason.
The confrontation was streamed live on Facebook, where approximately 2,500 viewers watched as members of the group read out extracts of Kelly’s online conversations with the decoy.
The court heard that Kelly had initiated contact with the decoy, April, on the dating site 'Say Hi' on March 18.
Despite being informed of her age, Kelly continued to communicate with her.
In addition to April, he also engaged in conversations with other decoys named Chelsea and Lacey, both claiming to be 14 years old.
During the online exchanges, Kelly made inappropriate remarks.
He expressed a desire for sexual activity with Chelsea, stating he wanted sex but not until she was ready.
He also suggested that if they were seen in public, she could pretend to be his daughter, indicating a disturbing level of grooming behavior.
Andrew Smith, representing Kelly, highlighted that his client suffers from underlying medical conditions and has difficulty communicating.
Smith emphasized that Kelly was genuinely embarrassed and remorseful about his actions.
He argued that Kelly believed he was communicating with minors under 18 and suggested that the involvement of the vigilante group might have influenced his behavior.
Smith criticized the activities of groups like One Reason, accusing them of cloaking their operations in a veneer of respectability while engaging in activities that could encourage such offenses.
He also pointed out that Kelly had no previous convictions and was considered a low risk for reoffending.
Damien Kelly, aged 39, of Reresby Crescent, Whiston, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to three counts of attempting to communicate sexually with children and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The court was told that Kelly believed he was interacting with minors under the age of 16, due to the deception by the vigilante group.
Judge Michael Slater sentenced Kelly to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, Kelly was ordered to complete a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
The judge issued a stern warning that any re-offense would result in immediate imprisonment, underscoring the seriousness of the case and the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation.
