DAVID BURNS FROM ROTHERHAM SENTENCED INCREASED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL IN SHEFFIELD
In a case that has drawn significant attention, David John Burns, a 34-year-old man from Rotherham, has seen his prison sentence substantially lengthened following an appeal by the UK government’s legal representatives.Burns, who was convicted of engaging in a series of sexual activities with a girl under the age of 15, initially received a sentence of 30 months after admitting to seven counts of sexual activity with a child at Sheffield Crown Court last October.
Burns’s criminal conduct involved a pattern of grooming and manipulation that began before the girl’s 15th birthday.
Over the course of their interactions, he lavished her with gifts valued at approximately £1,000, which served to deepen his influence over her.
The relationship escalated to the point where Burns and the girl engaged in sexual acts, often taking place in hotels within Sheffield.
Witnesses and police reports detailed how Burns took the girl to various hotels, where they shared kisses, cuddled, and ultimately had sex.
One particularly troubling incident occurred when Burns attempted to check into a double hotel room with the girl in Sheffield.
Hotel staff, suspicious of the situation, questioned the pair and requested proof that her parents had consented to her stay.
Sensing the suspicion, Burns and the girl left the hotel immediately.
However, Burns then took her to another hotel, where they continued their sexual encounters.
Police became involved after hotel staff from the first hotel contacted authorities, providing details that included Burns’s name, which he had used during the booking.
Law enforcement officers quickly arrested Burns, who chose not to comment during police interviews.
Later, Burns claimed that he had “fallen in love” with the girl and that his feelings had “got the better of him,” a statement that did little to mitigate his culpability.
The girl’s mother issued a statement expressing the profound impact of Burns’s actions, describing the crimes as causing “immeasurable pain and distress to her daughter and the rest of her family.” The case drew attention not only for the nature of the crimes but also for the initial leniency of the sentence handed down.
In an appeal heard in London’s Appeal Court, the Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC, argued that the original 30-month sentence was “unduly lenient” and failed to align with sentencing guidelines.
The appeal was supported by three senior judges, including Lady Justice Hallett, who emphasized that the punishment did not adequately reflect the severity of Burns’s offenses.
She stated that, after considering all mitigating factors and Burns’s guilty plea, the appropriate minimum sentence should have been four and a half years, which she subsequently imposed, increasing the original term by approximately 80 percent.
Burns’s defense highlighted his previously good character, his prompt guilty plea, and the fact that his personal life and career had been severely affected by the conviction.
Nonetheless, the court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such crimes are now being treated, especially those involving grooming and sexual exploitation of minors in Sheffield and the wider Rotherham area.
