BRIAN DARWENT'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN ROTHERHAM: CHILD ABUSE AND FAKED DEATH SHOCK COMMUNITY

In May 2004, the community of Rotherham was shaken to its core as the case of Brian Darwent, a man with a seemingly charming exterior, took a dark turn revealing the depths of his heinous crimes.

Darwent, who had built a reputation as a children’s party entertainer and also worked as a mechanic, was ultimately sentenced to four and a half years in prison after a series of disturbing revelations about his past actions.

Darwent, aged 42 at the time, was brought before Sheffield Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual abuse.

The court heard that he had sexually assaulted a young boy and a girl over a period spanning fifteen years.

The abuse against the boy began when he was just eight years old, with Darwent fondling him while threatening him to keep silent.

The girl victim, Emma, who was once Darwent’s stepdaughter, was assaulted when she was only ten years old, at their family home in Killamarsh.

Emma recounted how Darwent smiled at her during the attack despite her pleas for him to stop, a detail that left the court and the victims’ families deeply disturbed.

Emma, now 24, was visibly distressed during the sentencing, sobbing as she clutched her mother, Gill Ware, who is Darwent’s ex-wife.

Emma’s words echoed the pain she endured: “Four and a half years does not replace the last 15 years of my life.

I have blocked out my teenage years, but today is the day when I start again.” Her testimony highlighted the long-lasting trauma inflicted by Darwent, who had taken advantage of her innocence when she was very young.

The court was also told that Emma’s mother, Gill, had initially refused to believe her daughter’s accusations, a denial that contributed to Emma’s suffering and her subsequent time in foster care.

Darwent’s criminal record included four counts of indecent assault, with the incidents dating back to when the victims were children.

He also admitted to attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The charges against him were linked to episodes involving the young boy and Emma, with the abuse starting when the victims were very young.

The court heard how Darwent had threatened the boy to silence him and had fondled him, while Emma was assaulted in their family home, despite her desperate pleas for him to stop.

The court also revealed that Darwent had previously married Gill Ware in Scotland in 1989, and their marriage ended in divorce in 2001 amid allegations of infidelity.

In a shocking twist, Darwent was arrested in Inverness after he failed to appear for his sentencing in November of the previous year.

On the day he was due in court, he had abandoned his van near the Humber Bridge and left two suicide notes, leading police and family members to fear he had taken his own life.

However, Darwent’s disappearance lasted only five months.

He was eventually located after authorities traced a car he had purchased, believed to be insured in his name, in Inverness.

His arrest brought relief to his victims and their families, who had been living in fear and uncertainty during his absence.

Following his arrest, Darwent was remanded in custody and returned to Sheffield Crown Court.

His family, particularly his siblings, expressed their shock and disappointment, especially since they had believed he was dead.

A relative, who wished to remain anonymous, commented, “It’s a relief to know he’s all right, but he’s got no idea what he’s put this family through.

I was just getting over things.

Now I have to go through it all again.” Gill Ware, Darwent’s ex-wife, voiced her disgust at the sentence, stating, “It’s disgusting — four and a half years is not long enough.” She also reflected on her initial disbelief when Emma first confided in her about the abuse, explaining, “I just believed everything he said, he was my husband.

He was very personable, charismatic — a real charmer.” In the aftermath of the case, Emma expressed her relief that Darwent was finally behind bars, saying, “I’m just relieved that he can’t come and get me now.

When the police told me, at first I couldn’t believe it.

Then I thought: ‘Thank God for that.’ Now he’s going to get what he deserves, which is all we’ve wanted.” Her words underscored the long-standing pain and fear that had haunted her for years.

The case has left a lasting scar on the community of Rotherham, exposing the dark underbelly of a man who appeared outwardly charming but was capable of unspeakable acts of abuse.
