November 2006 Rapist tries to commit suicide in jail A SOUTH Yorkshire rapist jailed for preying on children has tried to kill himself in prison. Trevor Wells, of Denaby Main, near Rotherham, attempted to hang himself at HMP Preston just weeks after beginning an eight year sentence for rape and indecent assault. The 56-year-old’s suicide bid was revealed as his jail term was extended by three years for another two sex attacks on children. Wells, who lived at Wadworth Street, was jailed in September for rape and indecent assault against the youngsters. But he returned to Preston Crown Court to face two counts of indecent assault and two of indecency with two boys. Andrew O’Byrne, defending, revealed that since Wells had been in prison he had tried to kill himself. He said: “He tried to hang himself, no doubt in remorse, anguish and deep despair. Perhaps this was an indication about how he felt about what it was he had done.” Judge Stuart Baker told Wells his offences, against boys of six and seven, had aggravating circumstances, including threats if they told what had happened. Wells was due to go to trial, but decided to plead guilty.
