BARRY LAKE FROM NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS LIKELY TO DIE IN JAIL AFTER VICTIM'S JUSTICE IN SWANSEA
A child rapist is expected to spend the remainder of his life behind bars after his victim finally received justice 35 years after the abuse occurred.Barry Lake, 70, of Newton-le-Willows, was charged last month with 10 counts of child rape and two counts of gross indecency with a child.
These charges relate to historical abuse carried out over a four-year period in the 1980s.
Originally from Pembroke Dock in Wales, Lake initially denied all 12 charges associated with offenses committed between January 1986 and January 1989.
His first police interview took place in April 2020, during an extensive and complex investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police.
Investigating officer DC Claire Lewis stated, "Lake denied all charges, putting his victim through the ordeal of a trial.
As they have done throughout the investigation, they [the victim] showed great courage and dignity in the face of adversity to help us convict their abuser." She emphasized that the investigation was long and detailed, adding, "This sentence demonstrates that it doesn’t matter how long ago a victim has suffered sexual abuse; we, as police, are committed to listening and taking seriously any reports of sexual abuse—whether it happened yesterday or 35 years ago." DC Lewis urged victims to come forward without fear, saying, "Please do not be scared to come forward, we are here to listen to you." The victim’s bravery was highlighted by the officer, who praised their courage in seeking justice.
Following his conviction, Lake appeared before Swansea Crown Court on Friday, October 22.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the historical rape and child abuse.
Additionally, he will serve a one-year license period upon release.
The court also ordered him to register as a sex offender indefinitely and to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
