Zhenhao Zou, a 27-year-old PhD student from China, is currently on trial at Inner London Crown Court facing serious charges. He is accused of being "a persistent sexual predator, a voyeur and a rapist". The jury was informed that Zou is charged with drugging and raping 10 women between the years 2019 and 2024.The prosecution alleges that he used various substances including MDMA, butanediol, ketamine, and alprazolam (Xanax) in these crimes. Zou denies a total of 35 charges, which include 11 counts of rape, three counts of voyeurism, and several other drug and pornography-related charges.Catherine Farrelly KC, representing the prosecution, emphasized, "To the outside world, he undoubtedly presents as a smart and charming young man," but described him as a calculated offender who used drugs and alcohol to incapacitate his victims before assaulting them. She added, "The prosecution's case at this trial is that he would meet women, he would stupefy them, either with drugs or with alcohol, and, once they were significantly under the influence of those drinks or drugs, he would then rape them." The trial is filled with harrowing details about the alleged offences and will include recordings that the prosecution claims are Zou's "souvenirs of many rapes". It was revealed that police discovered numerous items related to the case during a search of Zou's home after the first victim reported the incident in May 2023. The first accuser spent time with Zou at his flat and, despite initially feeling uneasy and trying to leave, was allegedly dragged back and raped while unconscious. As the trial continues, the prosecution has identified at least two victims with claims of being assaulted in similar circumstances, including accusations from another woman who stated they were alone after a social gathering and that she lost consciousness during their interaction, later waking up to find Zou assaulting her.
