YI LIU, THE LONDON MATHS TEACHER, SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG BOYS
In January 2021, a London-based mathematics tutor named Yi Liu was handed an 18-month prison sentence after being found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and sexual misconduct with young boys under his tutelage. The case revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned several years, from 2012 to 2018, during which Liu exploited his position of trust to prey on vulnerable children.
Yi Liu, aged 63 at the time of sentencing, was accused of abusing four young boys, all under the age of 13.
The allegations detailed how Liu used his role as a teacher to manipulate and sexually exploit his pupils, taking advantage of their trust and innocence.
The severity of his actions prompted a criminal investigation, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Following his arrest, Liu was released on bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition against any unsupervised contact with boys under the age of 18.
Despite these restrictions, it was reported that in August 2018, Liu was able to resume working with children without supervision, raising concerns about the adequacy of the bail conditions and the potential risk posed by his continued employment.
The court's decision to sentence Liu to 18 months in prison underscores the seriousness of his misconduct and the importance of safeguarding children from predators in educational settings.
The case has also sparked discussions about the need for rigorous oversight and monitoring of individuals working with minors to prevent similar incidents in the future.
