WILLIAM WHITE AND SHOCKING RAPE CASE IN LONDON
Detectives are actively pursuing William White, a man convicted of serious sexual offences in east London, after he was sentenced in absentia.The case has garnered significant attention from law enforcement, as White remains at large and is now considered wanted by police authorities.
William White, aged 24 and residing on Paragon Road in Hackney, was officially sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, 1 August.
The court handed down a sentence of five and a half years in prison following his conviction for one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by touching.
Notably, White failed to appear at the sentencing hearing, which led to a warrant being issued for his arrest.
Police detectives emphasize the importance of the public's help in locating him and are urging anyone who has information about his current whereabouts to come forward.
White’s guilt was established during a nine-day trial that concluded on Friday, 19 May.
During the proceedings, the survivor bravely attended court to give her testimony against him, describing the horrifying ordeal she endured.
The court records detail how she was asleep and in a vulnerable state at the time of the attack.
Despite White's attempts to mislead the court and obscure the truth, the twelve members of the jury reached a unanimous verdict of guilt, confirming his involvement in the criminal acts.
Following his conviction, White is set to be registered on the Sex Offender Register for life.
Upon his eventual release from prison, he will be subject to ongoing supervision managed by specially trained officers to mitigate any further risk.
Detective Constable Jamie Merrill, the lead investigator in the case, issued a statement emphasizing the severity of White’s actions.
He said, “White subjected the victim to a horrifying ordeal when she was asleep and vulnerable.
Throughout the trial, he attempted to mislead the court about his actions, but the jury correctly identified his dishonesty and convicted him unanimously of rape.
Significant resources are being utilized to apprehend White, and I strongly urge anyone with information about his location to contact police immediately.” The incident that led to White’s arrest occurred earlier, on 17 January 2020.
The victim, along with a friend, attended White’s residence in Hackney for a social gathering.
She testified that she trusted White, having known him through mutual friends.
During the evening, she fell asleep and later awoke to find White engaging in sexual assault.
She promptly reported the assault to the police on 19 January 2020.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives arrested White two days after the report, and an extensive probe was carried out across London and the southeastern regions of England.
White was formally charged with the offence on 20 December 2021.
Detective Merrill expressed hope that the sentence provides a measure of closure for the survivor and confirms that justice has been served.
It is also noteworthy that White faced additional charges related to a second survivor; however, he was acquitted of those allegations.
Supporting the victim throughout the process was Police Constable Rita Stepanoviene, a specialist officer involved in the case.
She expressed gratitude towards the brave young woman and her friend who provided vital evidence.
“Their courage in coming forward has not only helped convict White but also potentially prevented him from harming others,” Stepanoviene stated.
She emphasized the police’s commitment to thoroughly investigating reports of abuse and encouraged others who may have experienced similar offences to contact law enforcement, assuring them of support and justice.
