DUNDEE TEACHER STEPHEN LAVERY BANNED FOR LIFE AFTER SEX OFFENSES IN SCOTLAND
In a significant development within the Scottish education sector, Stephen Lavery, a former primary school head teacher from Dundee, has been officially removed from the teaching register following serious allegations of sexual misconduct. The decision was made by the General Teaching Council after a lengthy investigation into Lavery's conduct, which has shocked the local community and raised concerns about safeguarding in schools.
Details of Lavery's misconduct emerged after a victim, now 26 years old, came forward to police approximately 15 years after the abuse took place.
The victim's testimony shed light on a disturbing pattern of inappropriate behavior that occurred during Lavery's tenure as a teacher.
The offences reportedly took place between 1977 and 1980, when Lavery was employed at Mossgiel Primary School in Dundee.
It was during this period that he engaged in acts of molestation against two young boys, acts which he later admitted to in court.
Last year, Lavery, then aged 45, faced a court hearing where he pleaded guilty to charges of molesting the two boys.
The court sentenced him to a three-year probation period and imposed strict restrictions on his interactions with children.
Specifically, Lavery was banned from being alone with any children, a measure designed to prevent further harm and to protect vulnerable youngsters.
Additionally, a sheriff in Dundee mandated that Lavery attend specialized therapy sessions tailored for sex offenders, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the need for rehabilitation.
Following the legal proceedings, the General Teaching Council took decisive action to ensure that Lavery would never return to a teaching role.
A spokesperson for the council confirmed that his name had been permanently removed from the teaching register, effectively barring him from working in any capacity within a school environment for the foreseeable future.
The spokesperson clarified that while he could theoretically seek employment in the private sector, such opportunities are highly unlikely, as private employers tend to prefer to hire registered teachers with clean records.
At the time of the revelations, Lavery was residing at Sommerville Place East in Dundee.
When approached for comment at his home last night, he declined to speak, choosing not to address the allegations or the consequences of his actions.
Lavery's previous employment was with Tayside Regional Council, where he served as head teacher at Our Lady’s Primary School in Dundee.
The council suspended him immediately upon discovering his secret, and he resigned from his position when summoned to a disciplinary hearing.
The offences, which tarnished his professional reputation, were committed during his early years as a teacher at Mossgiel Primary School, a period that now casts a long shadow over his career and the local education community.
