SCOTT BOWRING'S SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CRIME IN DUNDEE AND EDINBURGH LEADS TO REDUCED JAIL SENTENCE
In January 2012, a disturbing case involving Scott Bowring, a resident of Dundee, came to light when it was revealed that he had been caught possessing an extensive collection of child pornography, including videos depicting him abusing two young boys.Despite initially receiving a nine-year prison sentence, Bowring's conviction and subsequent appeal resulted in a reduction of his incarceration to eight years.
Bowring, aged 40 at the time, was found with more than 77,000 still images and approximately 5,000 video clips.
Police analysis of the footage revealed that it would take nearly 17 days to watch the entire collection non-stop.
Among the disturbing content, officers discovered footage of Bowring abusing two boys, one aged four and the other seven.
The images and videos were described as some of the worst of their kind, with many classified as the most depraved category of child exploitation.
Originally from Balmoral Gardens in Dundee, Bowring admitted to downloading and distributing indecent images during his appearance at the High Court in Edinburgh.
The sentencing judge, Lord Tyre, condemned his actions, stating, "You have in effect traded in this despicable material, regardless of whether any money changed hands." The court also uncovered homemade indecent videos that Bowring had personally filmed, adding to the severity of his crimes.
In addition to the possession and distribution of indecent images, Bowring pleaded guilty to two indecency offences dating back to 1994.
These involved touching and filming young boys while they were showering or in the bath at addresses in Dundee and Carnoustie, Angus.
One of the victims was only four years old, and the other was seven.
His defence counsel, Moira MacKenzie, argued that Bowring had sought help prior to his offences coming to light and expressed that he had shown genuine remorse, cooperating fully with police.
However, the prosecution highlighted the gravity of Bowring’s offences, emphasizing that he had committed acts of sexual abuse over a prolonged period.
Lord Reed, sitting with Lord Brodie, noted that the initial sentence did not sufficiently account for the guilty pleas, as a higher discount was granted for the sexual abuse charges than for the child pornography offences.
The Court of Appeal determined that Bowring should have received the same level of reduction for all charges, leading to the adjustment of his sentence.
Earlier in September 2011, Bowring was sentenced to nine years in prison after admitting to filming himself abusing two young boys.
The court heard that the collection of images and videos took over 16 days to view in its entirety.
Judge Lord Tyre described the material as among the worst of its kind, condemning Bowring for his blatant disregard for the harm caused to his victims.
The court also noted that Bowring was aware from an early stage that his conduct was criminal but continued regardless, demonstrating a distorted mindset.
Bowring’s offences were committed at various locations, including Dundee and Carnoustie, Angus.
He was detained in Perth Prison following his guilty plea.
His defence team stated that Bowring had finally recognized the need for help and was eager to break free from his long-standing addiction.
The police investigation was initiated after intelligence from other British and American authorities indicated that Bowring was involved in distributing indecent images online.
When police executed a search warrant at his residence, Bowring was not home but was later traced to his workplace, where he acknowledged the investigation and directed officers to his external hard drive containing the illicit material.
Judge Lord Tyre emphasized that Bowring’s actions contributed to the market for child exploitation, which perpetuates the suffering of victims.
As part of his sentence, Bowring’s license conditions were extended for three years beyond his prison term, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, underscoring the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing threat he posed to society.
