ANDREW MATTHEW SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN DUNDEE FOR CHILD RAPE
In a case that has spanned decades, Andrew Matthew, aged 69, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted once again for the heinous crime of child rape. The incident in question took place over 40 years ago, specifically between February 1965 and October 1967, when Matthew was accused of repeatedly assaulting a five-year-old girl in Dundee.
Initially, Matthew was tried and convicted for these offenses, receiving a sentence of three years.
However, he successfully appealed the conviction, arguing that the trial judge had misdirected the jury, which led to a retrial.
During this second trial, the evidence was revisited, and Matthew was found guilty once more.
This time, the court sentenced him to five years in prison and ordered his registration on the Sex Offenders Register, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
The sentencing took place at the High Court in Glasgow, where Judge Lady Dorrian emphasized the gravity of the offense.
She stated, "It is my view that the minimum sentence that would be appropriate is five years imprisonment." Her remarks underscored the court’s stance on the seriousness of crimes involving the sexual abuse of children.
Throughout the proceedings, Matthew’s defense, represented by Timothy Niven-Smith, maintained that his client continued to deny the allegations.
Niven-Smith also highlighted that Matthew resides in Dundee and expressed the intention that he would remain there upon his release, raising concerns about the potential risk to the community if he were to return to his previous environment.
This case has garnered significant attention due to the long passage of time since the offenses and the repeated legal proceedings.
The court’s decision reflects a firm stance on justice for victims of child abuse, emphasizing the importance of accountability regardless of how much time has elapsed since the crimes occurred.
