ROBERT CUNNINGHAM SENTENCED IN DUNDEE FOR CHILD'S DEATH AND OTHER ABUSES
In 2008, Robert Cunningham, 23, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of toddler Brandon Muir in Dundee.Judge John Morris at the High Court in Glasgow emphasized the severity of the offense, stating, "You must spend 10 years in jail." Outside the court, Brandon's grandmother Veronica Boyd expressed her frustration, saying, "It's not enough.
He has stolen and taken our grandson from us.
He has caused total devastation to both sides of Brandon Muir's family." Brandon Muir died after suffering a ruptured intestine following an assault by Cunningham at the flat on Balunie Crescent, which Cunningham shared with Brandon’s mother, Heather Boyd, 23.
The lengthy trial heard testimony from more than 50 witnesses, revealing how Cunningham punished Brandon for climbing on a window ledge by forcing him to stand against a wall.
The jury concurred with prosecutors that Cunningham applied pressure to the child’s abdomen "by means unknown," leading to organ damage and ultimately his death.
Despite the child's severe condition and vomiting hours after the incident, Cunningham and Boyd, who were both under the influence of drugs, failed to seek medical help.
Boyd was initially charged alongside Cunningham but was acquitted last month.
The jury also rejected a murder charge against Cunningham.
The case prompted a review of child protection services by Dundee City Council after it was revealed that social workers had been alerted to concerns about Brandon from family and neighbors.
Cunningham had a criminal record that included two previous convictions for dishonesty and failing to attend court.
