RICHARD GARDIENER'S CRIMES IN LONDON: TEENAGE VICTIM THREATENED AND BLACKMAILED
In a disturbing case that has shocked the London community, Richard Gardiener, a 20-year-old man from Birch Green, was found guilty of coercing a 15-year-old girl into sending explicit images and videos of herself. The incident, which unfolded over a period of months, involved threats and intimidation tactics aimed at forcing the young victim into compliance.
According to court records, Gardiener demanded that the girl send him sexual photographs and videos, warning her that if she failed to do so, he would share the images with her family and friends.
Despite her pleas and occasional expressions of distress, Gardiener remained unyielding and showed no remorse for his actions.
It was revealed that he was aware of her emotional state, having once caused her to cry during their exchanges.
The police became involved after the girl’s mother contacted authorities in April 2017.
The teenager had confided in her mother about receiving threatening messages on Snapchat from a man she only knew as Richard.
She had initially sent him several sexually explicit images, but when she refused to send more, Gardiener began issuing threats.
The girl explained to police that she had started communicating with Gardiener through social media, with their conversations eventually moving to Snapchat.
Although they had never met in person, they maintained daily contact and developed a relationship of sorts.
During police interviews, the girl disclosed that Gardiener had instructed her on the type of images and videos he wanted, and he even sent her a message containing a computer coding image, claiming he was a hacker capable of locating her IP address and revealing her location.
He threatened to share the images he was 'saving' of her with her family and friends, which terrified her into compliance.
On one occasion, she sent a tearful image of herself to Gardiener, who appeared indifferent to her distress.
Authorities seized her phone for examination, but initial efforts to identify Gardiener proved unsuccessful.
However, in August 2017, after the girl reactivated her Snapchat account, Gardiener reconnected with her within minutes.
Police investigations traced the Snapchat ID back to him, leading to his arrest at his residence in November 2017.
During the search, officers seized his phone and laptop, discovering photographs of the girl stored on his devices.
In police interviews, Gardiener initially denied any involvement with the victim and attempted to blame friends who he claimed had used his phone during their visits.
When confronted with evidence, he provided a name of one of his friends but later retracted his statement and refused to answer further questions.
Subsequently, he was charged with causing or inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity and possessing indecent images of a child.
Gardiener pleaded guilty to these charges at a previous hearing.
On Thursday, October 22, at Cambridge Crown Court, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.
The court also imposed a five-year restraining order to prevent him from contacting his victim, along with an order to complete 120 hours of unpaid community service.
Additionally, Gardiener was placed under a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and registered as a sex offender for the same duration, marking a significant step in addressing his criminal conduct and protecting the victim from further harm.
