MICHAEL PORTER AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN LONDON

A convicted paedophile who previously escaped a custodial sentence for his series of heinous sexual crimes against minors has now been formally resentenced to serve an 18-month term in prison.

Michael Porter, aged 38 and residing on Okehampton Close in North Finchley, underwent a resentencing hearing at the Court of Appeal on Wednesday morning.

This judicial review was prompted by the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, who deemed the initial sentence handed down to Porter as 'unduly lenient.' Between the years 1986 and 2000, Porter committed a pattern of distressing and criminal sexual activities involving young boys.

His predatory actions included groping boys while they were asleep in their beds and exploiting children he was supposed to be caring for during babysitting sessions.

The victims ranged in age from infants to toddlers; some, including an 18-month-old baby and a three-year-old boy, were so young that they were unaware they had been victimized.

These cases cast a disturbing shadow over the community and raised serious concerns about the adequacy of the original sentencing.

In August, Porter appeared before Bristol Crown Court, where he admitted to 25 charges encompassing gross indecency and indecent assault.

Judge Thomas Crowther QC originally sentenced him to a three-year community rehabilitation order, a decision that was met with significant public outrage and criticism from victims' advocates.

The judge acknowledged that Porter's troubled childhood, which he described as 'complex,' was a mitigating factor contributing to his actions, describing his behavior as 'understandable' under the circumstances.

In addition to the community order, Porter was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

This court-issued restriction barred him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 18 years old and prevented him from residing or sleeping at any address where children live.

Despite these measures, the public perception was that the sentence did not adequately reflect the severity of his crimes.

Consequently, the case was brought under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme, leading Baroness Scotland to escalate the matter to the Court of Appeal for review.

During the appeal hearing on Wednesday, Lord Justice Gage addressed the original sentence, stating, 'The judge took a course which he recognised as lenient and he described the case as exceptional.' He acknowledged the efforts Porter had made to avoid reoffending but emphasized the gravity of his crimes.

'We have to acknowledge that these were serious offences committed over a long period against multiple young children and adolescents.

Such offences demand both punishment and mercy, and they must be appropriately marked with a custodial sentence,' he added.

Porter voluntarily surrendered to police authorities last October in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, after one of his victims approached leaders of the Jehovah's Witness church in Portishead, where Porter was an active member.

The case drew further attention as it unfolded, adding to ongoing concerns about safeguarding and justice in the community.

This development occurs amidst reports of another controversial case involving a convicted paedophile in the same borough.

Andrew Josephs, formerly a resident of Edgware Way, Edgware, was released early from prison last week, according to police sources.

He had been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for multiple offences, including indecent assault on a boy and sexual activity with a second child.

Under parole conditions, Josephs is prohibited from entering the borough of Harrow, although it is believed that restrictions do not extend to the neighboring borough of Barnet.

Barnet police confirmed that Josephs remains under close supervision, with the probation service working alongside the Public Protection Unit.

Josephs, who previously taught Jewish studies at a school in Harrow, was convicted at Wood Green Crown Court last March.

The court found him guilty of four counts of indecent assault on one boy and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a second minor.

His early release and ongoing monitoring have fueled concerns about local justice measures and safeguarding efforts within the community.
