JAMAR BAILEY SENTENCED IN BIRMINGHAM FOR POISONING NEWBORN WITH PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Birmingham community, Jamar Bailey, a 21-year-old man from Augustin Grove, Winson Green, has been convicted and sentenced to a lengthy prison term for attempting to harm a newborn baby. The incident, which took place in June 2020, involved Bailey administering dangerous prescription medication to a three-week-old girl, leading to a serious medical emergency.
On June 27, 2020, the infant was rushed to hospital after her condition deteriorated; she was found to be listless and unresponsive.
Medical staff conducted tests that revealed the presence of sodium valproate, a drug commonly prescribed for epilepsy and bipolar disorder, but one that can be fatal to infants if ingested inappropriately.
The detection of this substance in the baby’s system raised immediate concerns about deliberate harm.
Authorities were quickly alerted to the situation, as the ingestion of the drug could not have been accidental.
Police investigations revealed that Bailey was taking medication for seizures himself, and a search of his residence uncovered a prescription for Epilim Chrono, which contains sodium valproate, registered in his name.
This discovery added weight to suspicions that Bailey intentionally administered the drug to the infant.
Further evidence was uncovered during the investigation.
Several items were seized from Bailey’s property, and toxicology tests confirmed the presence of sodium valproate in the baby’s milk bottle, indicating that the medication had been given to her through feeding.
The police also uncovered a disturbing search history on Bailey’s mobile phone, which included queries such as “how to poison a baby” and “how to kill a newborn baby,” suggesting premeditation.
Despite the severity of the incident, the young girl survived her ordeal.
She was placed under protective care and is currently thriving.
However, medical experts have indicated that it remains uncertain whether she will experience any long-term effects from the poisoning, and her future health remains a concern.
Jamar Bailey appeared in Birmingham Crown Court, where he admitted to the charges earlier this year.
Today, he was sentenced to 25 and a half years in prison for attempted murder, a verdict that reflects the gravity of his actions and the potential harm he intended to inflict on the innocent child.
