JOHN FLAVHIVE PRIEST FROM BIRMINGHAM JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS

In a case that has shocked the Birmingham community and cast a long shadow over the local Catholic Church, Father John Gerard Flahive has been sentenced to nine months in prison for the sexual abuse of three young girls under his care.

The conviction, which was handed down at Birmingham Crown Court in June 2002, marks a tragic chapter in the priest's career and highlights the ongoing issues of trust and misconduct within religious institutions.

Father Flahive, who was 52 years old at the time of sentencing, showed no visible emotion as the court delivered its verdict.

He had previously been convicted of four counts of indecent assault in April, after a trial that revealed disturbing details of his misconduct.

Flahive had denied a total of ten counts of indecent assault, which were alleged to have been committed over a span of nearly two decades, from 1973 to 1990.

The accusations involved five teenagers, and the court heard that Flahive had established several youth groups and choirs during his tenure in Birmingham and Walsall, where many of his victims had been recruited.

Following the sentencing, the Archbishop of Birmingham issued a formal apology, expressing deep regret for the harm caused by Flahive’s abuse.

The archbishop acknowledged the profound damage inflicted on the victims and emphasized the breach of trust that is fundamental to the relationship between clergy and parishioners.

The court ordered Flahive to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes.

Judge Laurence Marshall, who presided over the case, condemned Flahive for violating the trust that the community and the church place in its priests.

He emphasized that such breaches of trust are particularly egregious given the role of a priest as a moral and spiritual guide.

The allegations against Flahive date back to a time when he held various positions within Birmingham and Walsall, and the court’s proceedings revealed that he had used his influence to draw vulnerable teenagers into his circle.

In a statement, the Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, expressed his sorrow and regret over the incidents.

He stated, “I wish to express my profound sorrow and regret at the damage done by Father Flahive, most of all to those he assaulted.

I sincerely apologise to those who, in their youth, looked to him with trust, only to have that trust misused.” The archbishop also acknowledged the long-lasting impact of these events on the victims and hoped that the court’s findings would aid their healing process.

He further explained that both he and the Archdiocese of Birmingham had cooperated fully with law enforcement authorities once the allegations surfaced in October 2000.

Flahive was placed on “administrative leave” from his duties at St Thomas More Church in Sheldon, Birmingham, when the accusations first emerged.

The trial in April resulted in Flahive being cleared of five charges involving two girls, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a sixth charge, which was subsequently discharged.

Throughout the proceedings, the church leadership expressed their commitment to addressing the misconduct and supporting the victims.

The case remains a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding measures within religious communities and the need for transparency and accountability.

As Flahive begins his sentence, the community continues to grapple with the painful memories and the ongoing process of justice and reconciliation.
