IRTIZA ABBAS FROM BIRMINGHAM JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN ASTON AND PERRY BARR
A man identified as Irtiza Abbas, residing on Lozells Road in Birmingham, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two women in the Aston and Perry Barr districts of Birmingham earlier this year.Abbas, aged 25, pleaded guilty to charges involving a teenage girl and a woman, following a thorough investigation that included the analysis of CCTV footage which clearly linked him to the crimes.
The footage played a crucial role in establishing his pattern of predatory behavior, showing him selecting and following his victims before committing the assaults.
The victims, both of whom have shown remarkable bravery, have shared their stories publicly in the hope of encouraging others who may have experienced similar incidents but have not yet come forward.
Their courage has been instrumental in bringing Abbas to justice.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 16, Abbas was observed near Aston University.
Surveillance footage captured him following a 22-year-old woman who was walking alone in the area.
The footage revealed that Abbas followed her along Dartmouth Middleway for a period, ensuring she was unaccompanied and that no one else was nearby.
Once he was certain of her solitude, he approached and assaulted her.
Later, on Tuesday, April 16, Abbas targeted a 15-year-old schoolgirl in the Perry Barr area.
CCTV footage showed him closely trailing her along a street, frequently looking around to confirm he was not being watched.
When he was confident that no one else was around, he grabbed her and committed the assault.
The young girl, demonstrating remarkable bravery, managed to call her father, who was driving nearby.
They then drove around the area in search of Abbas, eventually spotting him.
A confrontation ensued, but Abbas managed to escape before police arrived.
Following these incidents, law enforcement officers meticulously examined the CCTV footage, which ultimately led to Abbas’s identification as the suspect.
He was arrested at his residence in Lozells on April 22.
During the search, officers recovered clothing that matched the description provided by the CCTV evidence.
Although Abbas initially denied involvement during police interviews, he recognized the strength of the evidence against him and ultimately pleaded guilty in court.
He was subsequently sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to two years in prison.
Detective Inspector Joe Davenport, who led the investigation, expressed concerns that Abbas might have committed additional offenses.
He stated, “We strongly believe due to the nature of the offences that Abbas may have committed more offences.
CCTV has shown him lingering on the streets and carefully selecting his victims.
He would follow them to make sure they were on their own before he struck.” Inspector Davenport emphasized the importance of community cooperation and urged anyone who might have been targeted or experienced similar incidents to come forward.
“Although he's pleaded guilty to two offences, there's a significant timeline gap, and we have strong suspicions that he may have offended repeatedly,” he said.
“Thanks to the bravery of the victims and our diligent efforts in analyzing every piece of CCTV footage, we have removed a potentially dangerous serial offender from Birmingham’s streets.” The police also highlighted their commitment to protecting women and girls from harm, actively managing individuals deemed high-risk.
They encouraged any additional victims to contact authorities via the 101 phone line or through the Live Chat feature on their website, quoting crime number 20/412643/24.
They reassured the public that victims of sexual assault are entitled to lifelong anonymity, emphasizing the importance of reporting such crimes to prevent further harm.
