GERALD KIRBY FROM LONDON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON BOYS DURING 1975 NORFOLK BROADS TRIP
In a case that has spanned over four decades, Gerald Kirby, a former scout leader from London, was involved in a disturbing incident during a trip to the Norfolk Broads in 1975.The incident involved two young boys, aged nine and ten at the time, who were participating as cub scouts during the Easter holidays.
Kirby, who was assisting as a scout leader, committed acts of sexual assault against both boys during the course of the trip, which has only recently come to light after a lengthy investigation.
According to court proceedings, the abuse occurred on a morning during the boat trip when Kirby entered the boys’ cabin.
Prosecutor Joanne Eley detailed that Kirby asked the boys if they had washed, then proceeded to instruct one of them to remove his pyjama trousers.
It was during this disturbing encounter that Kirby began touching the boy’s genitals.
The assault lasted approximately ten minutes, during which the victim reported hearing Kirby whispering something that he could not hear clearly.
The second victim also provided testimony, describing how Kirby checked to see if he had cleaned himself properly.
The boy recounted feeling “quite excited and shaking and sweating” as Kirby indecently assaulted him.
These traumatic events were not immediately reported; instead, the boys’ parents were told by Kirby and other trip leaders that the boys had been naughty, despite the boys’ own recollections of their behavior during the trip.
Decades later, one of the victims decided to come forward and report the abuse to the police.
This led to the other victim being identified and also making a formal complaint against Kirby.
During police interviews, Kirby denied any inappropriate conduct towards the boys, maintaining his innocence.
In court, Kirby, aged 70, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault relating to the period between March 29 and April 5, 1975, which coincided with what should have been the first day of his trial.
His guilty plea was entered just before the trial commenced.
The court sentenced him to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.
Additionally, Kirby was subjected to a six-month curfew, ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for ten years, and placed under a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
These measures are designed to monitor and restrict his activities to prevent any future harm.
The case highlights the long-lasting impact of abuse and the importance of justice, even many years after the original incidents occurred.
