ESA JUWARA, BIRMINGHAM SERIAL RAPIST FROM LIGHTHORNE AVENUE, LADYWOOD, SENTENCED TO LIFE
In a significant development in the fight against violent sexual offenders, Esa Juwara, a 21-year-old man from Lighthorne Avenue in the Ladywood area of Birmingham, has been convicted on multiple serious charges related to a series of brutal attacks on women in the city. The crimes, which spanned over a period from March 2019 to December 2019, involved a pattern of violent assaults, including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and the use of an offensive weapon.
The series of offenses began in the early hours of March 10, 2019, when Juwara approached his first victim on Reservoir Road while riding his pushbike.
When she rejected his advances, he responded with violence, grabbing her and threatening her with a knife.
Fortunately, her screams attracted the attention of her friends, who came rushing to her aid, causing Juwara to flee the scene.
His violent spree continued in July 2019, when he targeted another woman on Ladywood Road.
This victim also refused his advances, prompting Juwara to punch her repeatedly and strike her with a bike chain.
She managed to escape, but not before sustaining injuries, including a loose tooth that eventually fell out, along with bruises from the assault.
Three months later, in Icknield Port Road, Juwara confronted the same woman again.
This time, he was able to overpower her, punching her multiple times before raping her.
His violence did not end there; he attacked two more women in November and December 2019, raping one of them twice during that period.
In one of these incidents, he was initially thwarted by members of the public but threatened her with a knife before assaulting her again.
The pattern of violence persisted with a fifth victim in Chamberlain Gardens, where Juwara used his bike chain around her neck, causing her to pass out temporarily.
When she regained consciousness, she found herself being raped, only to be rescued by passers-by as Juwara made his escape.
Law enforcement officers, conducting plainclothes patrols in Ladywood Park in January 2020, spotted a man matching Juwara’s description riding a bike.
As they approached to arrest him, he threatened a female officer with his bike chain.
Officers discharged CS spray to subdue him, and although he attempted to flee, they managed to detain him.
Subsequent investigations linked Juwara to the crimes through DNA evidence from a sixth victim, who chose not to formally complain but provided testimony in court.
Juwara’s identity was confirmed through identification parades, where three victims recognized him, and his description matched the accounts of others.
The evidence was compelling enough for a conviction, and on May 5, 2021, Birmingham Crown Court found him guilty on all charges following a trial.
The court sentenced him to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 18 years before he can be considered for parole or release.
His sentencing marks a significant step in addressing the series of violent sexual assaults that terrorized Birmingham’s Ladywood community, and it underscores the importance of diligent police work and community cooperation in bringing such offenders to justice.
