CALLUM RAE FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN EDINBURGH AND DUNDEE
In October 2020, a man from Dundee named Callum Rae was sentenced to a total of 27 months in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.The incident, which took place in Dundee, involved Rae engaging in unprotected sexual activity with a girl who was only 12 years old at the time.
The police apprehended Rae after a dramatic chase through a residential area in Dundee.
According to reports, Rae fled from a house wearing only socks, attempting to evade law enforcement officers.
During his escape, he was confronted by police, and in a statement, he claimed, “She lied about her age.” The court proceedings revealed that the victim had told authorities that Rae might have believed she was 16 years old at the time of the incident.
However, the law clearly states that Rae’s actions constituted rape, regardless of his knowledge of her actual age.
Lord Beckett, presiding over the case at the High Court in Edinburgh, emphasized this point, stating, “In law, this is the crime of rape even although you did not know she was 12.” It was also noted that Rae was not forceful or coercive during the encounter and that he has shown remorse for his actions.
Rae had earlier admitted to sexually assaulting the girl and raping her at a residence in Dundee on May 15, 2019, when she was just 12 years old.
Additionally, he failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing in Glasgow on August 21 of the same year.
The investigation revealed that Rae had been communicating with the girl through social media platforms prior to the incident.
On the day of the assault, she had met up with a 16-year-old friend, and both had consumed vodka before they encountered Rae.
Rae, then 19 years old, engaged in consensual activity with the 16-year-old girl before asking the 12-year-old if she wanted to have sex, which he then proceeded to do.
The girl later confided in her mother about her encounter with Rae, revealing that she had sex with a man she believed to be 19.
This disclosure prompted police involvement.
The girl was able to identify Rae from a series of images shown to her by officers, leading them to a house in Dundee where Rae was located.
Advocate depute Jane Farquharson QC described the police response: “On their arrival, the accused ran out of the rear door of his property wearing only socks on his feet.
He ran through the local housing estate chased by police officers.
He was apprehended and arrested.” During his escape, Rae sustained a foot injury and was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.
While in the hospital’s emergency department, he reportedly told police officers, “that wee girl lied about her age so much, man.” Rae, who was participating in the court proceedings via video link from Polmont Young Offenders Institution, was sentenced to 21 months for the sexual assault and rape of the girl.
An additional six months were added to his sentence for failing to appear at court earlier that year.
The judge also ordered that Rae be placed under supervision for a further two years and that he be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
