ANTHONY WINTER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN LONDON
In December 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Anthony Winter, a 64-year-old man from London, who committed heinous acts of grooming and sexual assault against a young girl in South London.The case drew significant attention due to the brutality of the crimes and the bravery of the young victims who came forward.
Winter was residing temporarily at an address in South London, a neighborhood where children often played freely in the streets.
Over a period of several weeks, he systematically groomed a nine-year-old girl, using a combination of treats and money to gain her trust.
His manipulative tactics culminated in a horrifying sexual assault, which took place in a shed where he digitally penetrated the young girl.
The assault was so severe that the victim immediately confided in her friends, revealing the abuse she had endured.
The very next day, law enforcement authorities responded swiftly, and Anthony Winter was arrested.
Despite his arrest, Winter denied the allegations of assault, which led to a complex and emotionally taxing court process involving the victim and five other children who had witnessed Winter’s grooming behavior.
These witnesses faced the daunting task of giving evidence in court, including pre-recorded video cross-examinations conducted in March, a process that tested their resilience but also demonstrated their courage.
Detective Sergeant Laura Thomas, who led the investigation, praised the children for their strength throughout the ordeal.
She remarked, “It was terrifying for them but they were brilliant,” highlighting the bravery of the young witnesses in the face of trauma.
Following a six-day trial, Winter was convicted of two serious charges: assaulting a girl under 13 by touching and by penetration.
On December 14, he appeared before Croydon Crown Court to receive his sentence.
Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe presented evidence indicating that the victim had suffered profound psychological harm, now experiencing anxiety and fear whenever she encounters elderly men or motorbikes in her daily life.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Elizabeth Smaller addressed Winter directly, stating, “This once confident child now clings to her mum three years later because of your actions.
One can only imagine the distress that her mother felt when she was asked ‘Why did you not keep me safe?’ and the answer was that she trusted you.” The court also learned that Winter possessed pornographic images on his phone depicting young girls in school uniforms.
However, it was not established that these images depicted underage individuals, and Winter claimed ignorance about how they came to be on his device.
Despite the evidence, Winter maintained his innocence and showed no remorse for his actions.
Judge Smaller sentenced Winter to 11 years in prison, with an additional one-year extended license period.
He is expected to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.
The judge emphasized the consequences of Winter’s actions, warning him that the time spent in prison would be lonely and that upon release, he would likely face social isolation.
The court’s verdict underscores the severity of the crimes committed and the lasting impact on the victims and their families.
