In a disturbing series of events that have sent shockwaves through the London community, Andy Johnson, a 46-year-old man with a long and troubling criminal history, committed a heinous act shortly after being granted unsupervised day release from a psychiatric facility.The incident unfolded in Croydon, South London, where Johnson, who had been allowed to leave the hospital without supervision, broke his curfew, consumed alcohol and drugs, and then followed a mother and her young daughter.
Johnson forcefully entered their home, causing panic and distress.
Fortunately, the woman’s partner heard her screams and intervened, causing Johnson to flee the scene before any further harm could be done.
This alarming event has come to light after Johnson pleaded guilty to charges of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence, revealing the dangerous consequences of his recent release.
Details of Johnson’s criminal past are deeply troubling.
The court heard that in 1999, he received three life sentences after being convicted of raping a woman and her ten-year-old daughter the previous year.
Following this, he was transferred to Broadmoor Hospital under an order that mandated serving his sentence in a secure psychiatric facility unless he was deemed fully cured of his personality disorder.
His history also includes a 6½-year sentence handed down in January 2016 at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, for an attempted rape that occurred in Jersey in 1995.
Johnson’s criminal record is extensive, with a total of 52 previous convictions.
Among these was a particularly serious case involving the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl in 1996.
Despite the severity of his crimes, a psychiatrist ruled less than a year later that Johnson was sufficiently rehabilitated to be released into the community.
By January of this year, he was granted permission to leave the hospital three days a week for five hours each day, as part of his preparation for full release.
However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was arrested again in February.
The Ministry of Justice stated that Johnson’s release was based on “only after extremely tough risk assessment,” and the hospital trust involved is currently reviewing the case.
Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced next month, with reports still pending.
The case has raised serious questions about the safety protocols surrounding the release of high-risk offenders and the adequacy of risk assessments in such cases.
