ALEXANDER BURNS SHOCKS DUNDEE WITH DECADES-OLD SEX OFFENCES IN EDINBURGH COURT
In a case that has resurfaced disturbing memories from over four decades ago, Alexander Burns, a 62-year-old resident of Dundee, was sentenced to two years in prison for committing serious sexual offences against two young girls. The offences, which took place more than 40 years in the past, were brought to light during a High Court hearing in Edinburgh, revealing a troubling history of abuse that had remained hidden for decades.
According to court records, Burns, who had taken early retirement, engaged in inappropriate and abusive behavior towards two young girls during the late 1960s.
The court heard that his misconduct began with childish, seemingly harmless acts but escalated over time into more serious and invasive forms of molestation.
One of the victims, who was approximately 12 years old when the abuse started, was subjected to groping that grew increasingly intimate and invasive, marking a disturbing progression in Burns' conduct.
Further testimony from the victim's sister detailed a distressing incident in Dundee, where she was 15 years old and asleep in her family’s living room.
She recounted how Burns, who was known to her, climbed onto her and began to kiss and fondle her without her consent.
This incident added to the evidence of Burns’ long history of predatory behavior.
Burns, residing on Portree Avenue in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault with intent to rape, which dated back to September 1969.
His plea was entered during the proceedings, acknowledging the gravity of his actions from that period.
During the hearing, defense lawyer Matt Jackson stated that Burns claimed to have only a 'fading memory' of the events, suggesting that his recollection might be clouded by time or possibly an attempt to conceal his shame.
Jackson also mentioned that Burns had been under significant stress and experiencing difficulties in his marriage at the time of the offences.
He emphasized that Burns, with the benefit of maturity, was now horrified by his past conduct.
Judge Lord Turnbull addressed the court, emphasizing that sexual abuse of children by an adult warrants a prison sentence.
However, he also acknowledged Burns’ long period of seemingly blameless behavior, which spanned more than 30 years, and indicated that this could be a factor in potentially reducing the sentence.
Ultimately, Burns was sentenced to two years in prison, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes but also considering his life history.
This case has reopened painful memories for the victims and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice and accountability, even for offences committed many years ago, in the city of Dundee and beyond.
