NOTTINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR HIS SAVAGE ATTACKS ON PARTNER INVOLVING SUFFOCATION AND THREATS
A violent offender twice attempted to suffocate his former partner using a pillow, physically assaulted her, and made a chilling remark, saying “you have got me for life”.Nottingham Crown Court heard how Wayne Broomham’s victim feels he “ruined her life” after trying to control her movements and carrying out the two brutal attacks in Clifton.
During one assault, the 30-year-old, who has previous convictions for assaulting partners, told her “if you tell the police it will get more dangerous”.
At the time, he had just been released from secure mental health treatment and was not on his medication.
Broomham was jailed for three years and four months, with the judge stating, “There were two attacks on your partner at the time.
Each involved a significant loss of control by you followed by serious and dangerous assaults.
On the first occasion, you lost your temper, jumped on her, put a pillow over her face and your hand over her mouth and nose so she could not breathe.
It must have been terrifying.
You then used enough force to lift her off the ground, causing her to nearly lose consciousness.
In September 2023, you assaulted her again so badly that neighbors had to call the police.
You threatened to suffocate her again, pressed a pillow over her face, punched and kneed her, bit her, and warned her it would be worse if she called the police.
These attacks were extremely dangerous because anyone who places something over someone's face risks something far worse happening.
The victim stated she now struggles to go outside, feels paranoid, and says she has lost herself.
She described being left feeling afraid of others and only going out during daytime, emphasizing how Broomham’s behavior “ruined her life” and led to her isolation.
Broomham, who is in HMP Nottingham, pleaded guilty to charges of intentional suffocation and assault causing actual bodily harm.
He has eight prior convictions for 16 offences, including violence against former partners.
Mitigation lawyer Lucy Jones mentioned that he spent from 2015 to 2023 in a secure unit on a hospital order and, upon release, was not taking his medication for ADHD and Asperger’s.
She acknowledged that he has been remanded for 12 months without knowing how much longer he will remain in custody.
Besides his jail sentence, the judge also imposed a restraining order prohibiting Broomham from contacting the victim or another named individual and from going to two streets in Clifton.
